With group shows such as Parallel Universe, which he will reprise for this year's Art Basel Miami in December, and Monsters of Lowbrow, Francesco LoCastro makes sure the spotlight shines bright on South Florida's underground art scene. While he could be content with his own commercial successes, including a recent ad campaign for Converse, LoCastro remains one of the scene's most ardent supporters. The 28-year-old, Italian-born artist, whose lowbrow/surrealist pop style puts him in league with artists such as Colin and Sas Christian and Skot Olsen, has put together some impressive shows to make up for the dearth of local galleries devoting wall space to this kind of art. In May, Monsters of Lowbrow provided a survey of artists working in the style, including Olsen, the Christians, Esao Andrews and Michael Hussar, among others. Now on view in the Miami Design District, LoCastro's Culture Shock: Art of the New Movement show presents more of the same.
