Sweat Records
2320 N.E. Second Ave., Miami, 305/573-5681, www.sweatrecordsmiami.com
Laura Reskin and Sara Yousuf opened this one-stop shop for CDs, records, DVDs, local art and Japanese toys this past March during the Winter Music Conference with a party that drew about 500 people. Besides having a diverse selection of indie, electro, underground hip-hop and punk music, Sweat stocks albums by legendary acts such as Johnny Cash and hosts a monthly book club meeting. An in-store turntable allows shoppers to sample the merchandise and show off their skills. As much a community enrichment project as a record store, Sweat hosts performances by everyone from local acts such as Awesome New Republic to indie icons like Fugazi's Ian MacKaye. Reskin and Yousuf say they plan to launch their own record label by year's end.
