Trader Joe's announces opening date for Wellington store

Trader Joe’s fans, let the countdown begin.

The wildly popular grocer has set a May 16 opening date for its Wellington store, at 2877 S. State Road.

Trader Joe’s is known for having a widespread, loyal following passionate about the grocer’s affordable and uncommon assortment, which includes marinated artichokes, spicy chicken sausages and organic popcorn with olive oil. Inexpensive “Two-buck Chuck” wines are also a hit.

Most of the items on shelves bear the company’s private label.

Aside from Wellington, Trader Joe’s plans to open stores this year in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Pembroke Pines. The California-based chain has not announced opening dates for those stores.

South Florida’s first Trader Joe’s debuted last fall in Miami-Dade County’s Pinecrest neighborhood. Customers lined outside the store for hours before the grand opening. Many of them said they used to drive regularly — about four hours round trip — to another Trader Joe’s in Naples before the company’s arrival in Pinecrest.

Trader Joe’s stores are smaller than supermarkets like Winn-Dixie or Publix. They don't take coupons or offer periodic sales or discount cards. Its staff, “crew members,” wear Hawaiian-themed shirts and help create a fun shopping experience for enthusiastic customers.
About a dozen new products are introduced every week, Trader Joe’s said.

The Wellington store will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
