What to bring to the hospital.

The first signs of labor and the subsequent trip to the hospital can be exciting and full of anticipation -- but also mixed with fear and nerves. Making preparations in advance can alleviate some of those fears, giving you one less thing to worry about.
Here are some items to include in your checklist:
Pajamas. Some women feel more comfortable in their own PJs, rather than the hospital gown. If you plan to breast-feed, bring a set of nursing pajamas or ones that open in the front. Bring sleepwear that fits the pregnant you because after the baby is born -- either vaginally or by C-section -- you still will look six-months pregnant. You may also feel more comfortable in your own clothing when visitors arrive. Don't forget to toss in a pair of comfy bedroom slippers. • Nursing pillow. Childbirth is exhausting. And if you plan to breast-feed, a nursing pillow, such as a Boppy, will be a relief. The baby can rest on the pillow instead of your arms, which most likely will be fatigued from labor. • Breast shields and cream. Those first few weeks of breast-feeding can be tough. The pain experienced during that time can cause some new moms to quit, so anything to encourage sticking to it should be considered. The last thing cracked and bleeding skin needs is to rub unprotected against a nursing bra or pajamas. Stores such as Target and Babies 'R' Us sell plastic shields that fit into your bra that help protect the skin. Also using a nipple cream from day one will help the soreness, and it is not harmful to baby. • Clothes and blanket for baby. The hospital will have everything you need for your baby, including diapers, wipes, blankets and a T-shirt. Some hospitals will not let you take the blanket home, so make sure to include a blanket and a going-home outfit. • Car seat. The hospital will not allow you to leave without a properly installed car seat. Many local fire stations offer free car seat inspections. • Snacks for Daddy-to-be. Even though you can't eat or drink anything while you're in labor, there's no point in the father-to-be having to fast, as well. And, well, no one wants a hungry, grumpy coach. Even if the last thing he's thinking about is food, it can't hurt to have a few snacks on-hand just in case. • Toiletries. Don't forget the everyday essentials: toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, etc. The hospital may provide shampoo and conditioner, but beyond that, you're on your own. • Baby Book. Imprint baby's footprints, and record time of birth and baby's weight and height. • Music. Familiar, calming music can help soothe during long hours of labor. • Pillow. No doubt your own pillow will be fluffier and more comfortable that the standard hospital pillow. Bring one for Dad, too. • Change of clothes. Unless you want to wear the same outfit home that you wore to the hospital, pack a comfortable outfit and underwear. Dad should bring a change of clothes and toiletries, as well. • Health insurance information, hospital pre-registration forms and two forms of ID.Camera with extra batteries.Cell phone charger.
