Walk raises money, awareness for food allergy By Nadia Sorocka South Florida Sun-Sentinel
There are more than 12 million Americans with food allergies, according to the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, and of those, 3 million are children. FANN will be hosting its second annual Walk for Food Allergy Nov. 21 at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne to raise money and awareness for food allergies. This year, the goal is to raise $70,000, while nationally, it's $2.7 million with 33 walks. The money raised allows FAAN to fund educational programs and research cures to food allergies. Communities that host a walk are awarded community outreach grants that further local education programs. Scholarships are also awarded to school nurses in the area to defray the cost of attending the National Association of School Nurses Conference. Baby strollers and wagons are welcome during the walk. Afterward, there will be a family-friendly event with children's games and activities, giveaways and live music. Local allergy doctors, practices and support groups will be available to answer questions and hand out information. Food manufactures and vendors that specialize in food allergies will provide samples and information.
