Best Kept Secret
Little perks for little customers

Let's face it; taking the whole family out to dine is pretty pricey -- even if it's just for a cup of coffee. Take heart, you don't need to go off the beaten path to satisfy everyone -- just off the menu.

It's been a long day -- at school, work, or shopping. You and your family slog around looking for a bit of refreshment. Mom is hankering for a caffeinated pick-me-up in the form of a Grande Carmel Macchiato. However, Junior's not ready for a tall non-fat latte, nor is he interested in a giant bottle of water or a vitamin-chocked Odwalla smoothie. Never fear, Starbucks offers a kid's option in what's called a "short cup." An 8-ounce serving of child friendly favorites like milk, hot chocolate (not to be served over 120 degrees) or a delectable Vanilla Creme. The perk: Any menu item served in the "short cup" can be ordered for the value price of $1. At this price you may even swing for that giant cookie.

Over at The Cheesecake Factory, you've waited an hour to be seated and the toddlers are restless. Baby is pounding the table with tiny fists, mouth in the shape of a square. Here comes the waiter to the rescue with "the Baby Plate." If you've not been offered this courtesy outright, by all means ask. It's simple fare: a selection of sourdough and whole-wheat breads with a side of bananas -- for hungry little diners under age 3, for free. It buys mom and dad just enough quiet time to order and wait for the giant servings of delicious food The Cheesecake Factory is famous for.

These small considerations make outings a tad more palatable and keep these establishments high on the family-friendly list.
