BEST OF THE BEST PLACES TO GIVE BIRTH

SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL
6200 SW 73rd St., South Miami
786-662-4000
www.baptisthealth.net
There are many reasons that more than 3,000 babies a year are born at South Miami Hospital. Maybe it's the celebrity babies - Alonzo Mourning's offspring were born here as were Sylvester Stallone's. Perhaps it's the excellent education program, Great Expectations, taught by a nurse with 27 years experience, which is available to all pregnant mothers, even if they are not able to deliver here. Most likely, it's the highly trained staff whose goal it is to make the birthing experience just what it should be, even if your birth is a c-section. More than half the births at this hospital are surgical, so the staff knows just how to get you up and going again after the surgery. An added plus, the hospital currently has a Level II neonatal intensive-care unit but will upgrade to a Level III designation by late 2008.

BAPTIST HOSPITAL
8900 N. Kendall Drive, Miami
305-596-1960

The birthing suites at Baptist Hospital's Family Birthplace are so homey and comfortable you may miss the high-tech medical equipment hiding in the softly lit room. The Family Birthplace's caring staff is devoted to making a patient's stay as comfortable as possible, from parents' first childbirth classes to the day proud parents leave with their newest family member. The hospital features a Level III neonatal intensive-care unit, lactation consultant services and a feature called the Stork Inn that allows moms and babies to stay on in hospital for an extra night or two, space permitting, even after the doctor gives the OK to leave.

WEST BOCA MEDICAL CENTER

561-488-8000
www.westbocamedctr.com

The hospital won the prestigious honor of being chosen as a five-star facility and given the 2006/2007 Maternity Excellence Award, an honor that places the facility in the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for maternity care. West Boca Medical Center features private birthing suites, 24-hour anesthesiologist services, flexible visiting hours and a Level III neonatal intensive-care unit.

Patients may feel as if they've stepped into a suite at a posh hotel rather than a hospital room when they check in to one of 12 private labor/delivery/ recovery rooms at Boca Raton Community Hospital's One Family Place. Each room features a comfortable bed, a sleeper sofa for mom's support person, a rocking chair for those all-important first feedings, an armoire with television and a dining table for parent's first meal as a family. Memorial Regional is one of the few hospitals in the area with a regional perinatal intensive-care center should a patient require high-risk pregnancy care or neonatal intensive care. www.mch.com
Miami-Dade County residents are fortunate to have one of the nation's best pediatric hospitals right in Miami. From the tiniest patients in the neonatal division, which admits more than 900 newborns each year, to the bigger kids who occupy the facility's 257 beds, each patient is treated to the highest level of care. Miami Children's Hospital is home to the only freestanding pediatric trauma unit in Florida and is the No. 1 provider of pediatric orthopedics. It's not just the comprehensive list of services here that has earned the trust and respect of its patients and their parents but also the hospital's ongoing commitment to making a child's stay less scary. Kids can tune into Radio Lollipop, the hospital's in-house station, enjoy strolling clowns, visiting dogs and take a break in the well-equipped playroom to keep their minds off of why they're there.

The hospital also specializes in endoscopic surgery for cranial abnormalities. The hospital also offers a wide array other pediatric services, from allergy and immunology to hematology and oncology. This four-story, 81-bed pavilion on the grounds of St. Mary's Medical Center features its own entrance and admitting offices. It offers private rooms, a playroom and a theater on each floor.
