In Reach for the Arts classes, children work through all kinds of media - drawing and painting, wire sculpture, clay and pottery and much more - to find the way that they can best express themselves and their creativity. "I hope to catch them before someone has told them they're not an artist," says Candance Hillier, Reach for the Arts owner. "The most important thing is how they think and feel about being creative." Hillier's "mission of love" began several years ago in partnership with a music teacher who has since retired from the business - so today's Reach for the Arts is all about teaching kids how to work in visual and tactile media. But that doesn't make the program any less special. The business has grown by word of mouth for good reason, as the readers who voted for it well know. Children ages 3 to 11 can take weekly art classes in which they learn how to work with a variety of media while subtly learning the formal side of art. "It's the process, not the product, that matters," Hillier says.
