Sun-Sentinel

  E-mail story   Print story

There are hundreds of choices of summer camps in Florida, and our judges pick the best of the best.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

GOLD

Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center
18900 NE 25th Ave., North Miami Beach
305-932-4200
www.marjcc.org

The Russell JCC Camp is situated on the banks of the Oleta River, allowing students to spend time in a scenic retreat for the summer. You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy these camps, but if you are, Camp Sol Taplin is dedicated to helping students understand their Jewish identity. Weekly programs give the students a chance to learn about their religion through arts and crafts in a relaxed atmosphere. Judaic programming, music, dance and pre-Shabbat programs entertain children. The Variety Camps give students options to have traditional camp adventures or focus on a topic. Topics include sports, art, science or teen travel.

PALM BEACH COUNTY

GOLD

FAU Sports Camps
Florida Atlantic University Campus
777 Glades Road, Boca Raton
561-297-3000
www.fau.edu

Over the years, FAU has developed what started off as a small day camp into a 50- to 100-student sports training camp. The camps provide a combination of game-play and skills practice to provide players with the most well-rounded proficiencies. In the morning, all campers warm up together allowing even the youngest players to feel part of the group. Then they practice techniques together, ages 5-15, where the older members look out for the little ones, while the little ones think they are really competing with the older ones. Campers come out of these camps ready for their sports season to kick off.

Additional YMCAs in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach and throughout Miami-Dade County. YMCAs have grown through 110 summers to offer so much more than team sports classes. They have moved into technology, nature and programs for every child to enjoy. YMCA day camps serve children with academics, arts and sports. Newer programs include singing, swimming, art, computers and nature hikes. Kids at the YMCA are encouraged to have fun in a welcoming environment. Each branch differs in camps offered, so check your local YMCA for details.

JUDGES' CHOICE

Police Athletic League
2310 N. 23rd Ave., Hollywood
954-921-3401
www.hollywoodpolice.com

The Police Athletic League in Hollywood is changing the scary stigma that sometimes comes with police officers to children and teens. The judges were impressed by the way the Hollywood officers develop discipline, self-esteem and positive moral values in children through competition in various sports. By having positive contact with the police, children ages 6–18 learn to trust them and, in turn, the officers instill pride in the children.
