Who says fast food has to be unhealthy? Our judges put extra energy into this effort. The food may be "fast," but it's also low-calorie, low-cholesterol, heart-healthy and tastes great. Just what parents want for their kids – and themselves. The chicken is USDA Grade A, and contains no hormones, chemicals or preservatives. Everything is served fresh, never frozen or microwaved. Chicken is available on the bone, as skinless, boneless breast platters, in pitas and paninis, or in the signature "Chop-Chop" -- a freshly marinated chopped boneless breast of chicken topping a bowl of rice. Kids' meals include a choice of a quarter chicken (leg and thigh), a mini Chop-Chop or teriyaki glazed chicken with pita bread, with yellow rice, corn, beans or mashed potatoes, and a drink. In most locations, kids 10 and younger eat free on weekends with a paid adult. Customers have the option of low-carb, whole wheat tortillas, and low-fat cheese can be substituted in any dish. Only nonfat refried beans are served, and 100 percent canola oil is used for cooking. Lime Fresh Mex takes much of the guilt away from indulging in this favorite cuisine. Salsa -- seven different varieties of it -- is made fresh on the premises daily and the restaurant even bottles its own brand of hot sauce. The selection of menu items includes soups, salads, appetizers, and a variety of tacos, fajitas, quesadillas and burritos, all reasonably priced. Apparently, South Floridians just can't get enough. The company is launching a large expansion this year and even offering franchising opportunities. PALM BEACH COUNTY GOLD Subway www.subway.com Subway isn't kidding about trying to make us healthier. It has made adjustments to its Kids Pak in recent years, offering a juice box and fruit roll-up as options. Even the toys included with the kids' meal, like the mini-frisbee, are activity-driven to keep kids moving and exercising. Subway offers plenty of choices, and everything is made fresh to order right before your eyes. In addition to lunch, recent Subway campaigns focus on hot sandwich choices for consumers as quick and healthy dinner options. Grab a variety of hot sandwiches on your way home from work, throw a blanket on the floor, flip on a favorite movie and have an indoor family picnic. Kids love it, Mom and Dad get a break from cooking, and the meal can be as diverse as everyone wants and somewhat healthy too. Just pile on the veggies. Home-style choices include chicken, turkey, meatloaf and ham with side selections of vegetables, soups, salads, potatoes, mac-and-cheese and more. The company has recently started to bring its menu items into the deli departments of local supermarkets, offering yet another way to serve a quick meal to your family.
