Family Outings Best Children's Museum South Florida Parenting
These outstanding South Florida museums are oriented toward your children. Go there or be square, so say the judges! MIAMI-DADE COUNTY GOLD Miami Children's Museum 980 MacArthur Causeway, Miami Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission: $10; under 12 months, free. From bilingual interactive exhibits to classes and camps, this museum provides a fun learning environment. Permanent exhibits include a 6-foot piggy bank, a supermarket, a two-story "sand" castle, a cruise ship, a television studio, a replica of the Port of Miami, a safety zone and the new "You and Me and Teddy Bears, Too" exhibit, which teaches the importance of respect and appreciation. Mount MiChiMu, a 30-foot indoor rock climbing wall, is open to kids 4 and older. Special events and programs throughout the year include an annual celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday and a Halloween haunted house. Watch for details soon on the new "Robot Rodeo" traveling exhibit. Also, coming in February 2007, Let's Play Railway, and in May 2007, "Oh Seuss! Off to Great Places." New themed birthday celebrations include "A Beary Special Birthday," "Princess Tea," "Pirate Pals" and "Kid Jams Music" parties. Ocean Ave., Boynton Beach Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Admission: adults, $5; 2-17, $3; under 2, free. 561-742-6780, www.schoolhousemuseum.org Interactive exhibit areas, dress-up, real-life props for imaginary play and places to climb on and crawl into. Sure doesn't sound like the traditional definition of a history museum, does it? Schoolhouse is a fun place, a history place and a learning place all in one. Special Saturday programs, such as Making Ice Cream and Creating Big Bubbles, make this a great family place too. That's why this museum has been named a Kids Crown winner since the year it opened. Visit the Community Archives for a fascinating display of timeless books enjoyed by children and families over the years. The exhibit includes interesting facts about the authors and publishers of such family and children's classics as the Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Eloise, the Berenstain Bears and more. Visitors are invited to complete a card for the Memory Board and share memories of the classic books of your childhood. IMAX additional. 954-467-6637, www.mods.org With words like "science" and "discovery" in its name, how can one not expect to always find something new happening at this Kids Crown favorite? Hang out with bats and turtles. Explore Florida's amazing Everglades. Meet alligators, get charmed by a 12-foot snake, pet a big green iguana, fly like an astronaut. Explore outer space, operate a replica of the Mars Pathfinder and calculate how much you would weigh on other planets. And then, immerse yourself in a five-story, giant-screen adventure at the Blockbuster IMAX Theater. The newest traveling exhibit is truly out of this world. "Aliens: Worlds of Possibilities" will be on display at the museum May 27–Oct. 31. Take a peek at the world with alien eyes using an infrared camera, look through a telescope at a star field, see a real piece of a Martian meteorite, and experience a close encounter with giant robotic aliens. The newest IMAX film, Deep Sea 3D, narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, brings moviegoers face-to-face with some of the planet's most unique, dangerous and colorful creatures.
