Get the skates out of the closet, and let's go!

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

GOLD

One Cool World
Adventure Sports Learning Center
Skate Park in Coconut Grove
2820 McFarlane Road, Coconut Grove
Admission: weekdays, $7; weekend, $10
305-290-5150, www.onecoolworld.com

This indoor/outdoor recreation center isn't just a skate park. It's a full learning center, after-school program and summer camp. The quality of the programs and facility set One Cool World apart.
If your child wants to learn inline skating and skateboarding tricks from those who really know how to do it -- and much more safely than a bunch of kids in the street -- One Cool World is the place to go. The Grove Skate Park in Peacock Park is shaded by oak trees, making for a nice setting for the 10,000 square feet of ramps, stairs and rails. Most of the ramps are designed for training, and some of the equipment is low to the ground and perfect for beginners. And there are more advanced obstacles for more experienced skaters. Adventure Sports also teaches BMX biking using not only the skate ramps, but trails in Peacock Park.
All skaters and cyclists are required to wear helmets. The focus is on learning the fundamentals safely. The center also offers other activities including fishing and kayaking and computer-related activities, and it has a "chill center" with computers and other equipment to help kids get their homework done in its after-school programs.

Your daughter wants to be a figure skater; your son is into roller hockey. Where do you go? Here, where they can do both -- at the same time. One side is an ice rink, the other is for roller skating. Learn-to-skate classes are now available for kids as young as 2 in the new Tot-and-Parent class. Don't forget to wear warm clothing for the ice rink. Homeschoolers can get their physical education credits fulfilled through a course offered here.
Birthday parties, as well as both a hockey summer camp and ice-skating summer camp are offered. Open skate, drop-in sessions take place daily during the summer, but call to confirm times. Sunday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the rink is reserved for novice skaters. Skate guards are on both the roller and ice rink at all times to ensure everyone's safety.

Brian Piccolo Regional Park

For the past seven years, inline skaters and skateboarders have found that if you really want to skate, this park is the place to go. The park appeals to a wide range of ages and skill levels, from beginners to experts. Mini ramps, a small street course and a large street course with launch boxes and launch ramps, grinding boxes, half-pipes, quarter pipes, bowls and more, plus a spine ramp and vert ramp, make this the largest and most diverse course anywhere in the region.
Helmets are required and pads are highly recommended, so if your child gives you a hard time about wearing protective gear, bring him here. He'll see serious skaters seriously following the rules.
At present, no lessons are available, but skaters can learn a lot from watching each other during open skate sessions. Kids must be 6 or older to skate. Staff recommends that beginners come to the first session on weekend mornings, as the park is less busy then. BMX bikes are also allowed in the park, but have separate sessions.
