This repeated Kids Crown winner knows her customers by name, what their kids eat, who's allergic to what and exactly what goes into each and every order. Anny says what makes her place special is the people, the atmosphere and the ingredients. The wheat is grown in Montana and milled daily. The breads are fat-free and contain no eggs. Just listening to Anny describe her Blue Ridge Mountain Herb or Holiday Bread, with ingredients like whole wheat, apricots, dates, walnuts and toasted pecans is enough to make you want to make the trip there from anywhere. The business has expanded into a full-service bakery now, offering fancy cakes, tiramusu and a complete line of cookies -- all, of course, made from scratch. Nothing is ever frozen, so you will need to order ahead for special occasions. Few aromas are as enticing as the smell of bread baking in an oven. Drop by Panera to dine in or pick up a loaf to take home, and indulge your senses. In addition to an assortment of fresh, delicious breads -- including lower-carb pumpkin and Italian herb -- the menu also offers breakfast souffles, bagels, assorted spreads, special soups that can be served in a bread bowl upon request, salads, sandwiches and pastries. Beginning in May, all locations introduced kids' meals with a choice of grilled cheese with organic American cheese, PBJ with all-natural peanut butter and grape jelly, or turkey, roast beef or ham with organic American cheese. Each kids' meal will also include a Horizon organic squeezable yogurt tube and a choice of milk, chocolate milk or apple juice. Panera now offers free wireless Internet at all locations and prides itself on providing an environment that is family-friendly as well as a great place to socialize or have an informal business meeting. Oprah's favorite is the key lime bundt cake, but no matter the flavor or the occasion, everything is made from scratch with the highest quality ingredients by trained professional bakers. The bundt cake recipes will air on an episode of The Food Network this summer, and two of the store's bakers were involved in a Food Network wedding cake competition as well. (They placed an incredible second.) Just imagine what they could do for a child's dream cake. The owner here will tell you up front that the store is pricier than most, but that's because of the quality of the cakes and the time put into each creation. And creations they are. Accents and decorations are all edible, created from sugars and chocolates and the painstaking efforts of skilled bakers. A quarter-sheet, themed cake for a child's party of 15–20 kids with butter cream cheese frosting will run you about $63. Stacked cakes, which make for beautiful centerpieces as well, start at $4 per person. A complimentary, 4-inch "smash cake" to match a child's first birthday cake is offered to parents for that special milestone. In case you're wondering, the most popular cake, The Hassle Cake, is half-chocolate, half golden butter, with the store's signature butter cream cheese frosting on the outside and butter cream cheese fudge frosting in the middle. You can browse through books in either location or check the web site, but either way, be sure to place an order at least one week in advance of your occasion. BROWARD COUNTY GOLD Vicky's 17537 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines 954-392-5958 This Cuban bakery and frequent Kids Crown winner is as well known for its empanadas and pastelitos, little pastries filled with chicken, cheese, guava and cheese or ground beef, as it is for its delectable cakes and pastries, including cookies and Napoleons.
