Everglades High student a finalist in state pageant
Kathleen McCarter, a junior at Everglades High, will compete as a finalist in Florida's National American Miss Pageant. She heads to Orlando, where on July 12, she will have a chance to win $1,000 and the pageant's crown.

The Broward School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to lay off almost 400 teachers, despite pleas from more than 150 parents, teachers and students -- mostly from West Broward High School -- to keep them in their jobs.

Notter says a third of imperiled teachers' jobs will be saved
About a third of 396 teaching jobs now on the chopping block will be saved, the Broward schools superintendent said at a workshop today.

More than 75 percent of the nearly 3,000 public schools in Florida received an A or B and the number of F schools dropped to 44, the lowest number in three years, state educators said.
South Florida schools earned more A's and B's and fewer F's on their final report cards, which were just issued by the state.
