Kathleen McCarter, a junior at Everglades High, will compete as a finalist in Florida's National American Miss Pageant. She heads to Orlando, where on July 12, she will have a chance to win $1,000 and the pageant's crown.

McCarter, who's active with her school's color guard and marching band, will compete in a pageant meant to promote "inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation." Should she win, McCarter will fly to Disneyland in California to compete in the national pageant.
