Broward passed over for prize

The Broward County School District got another shot Wednesday at the Broad Prize for Urban Education, a prestigious award for urban school districts that comes with $1 million in scholarships for graduating seniors.

The school district was a finalist for the second year in a row for the prize.

Broward didn't take home the big prize, but the district still will receive $250,000 for scholarships for graduating seniors, as it did when it was a finalist last year.

The Broad Foundation picks the scholarship winners, who in May received $20,000 to attend a four-year school and $5,000 to attend two-year community colleges or technical schools.

Those prizes were awarded to students who showed dramatic improvement in grades and demonstrated financial need.
