Small programs boast big talent Christy Cabrera Chirinos South Florida Sun-Sentinel Posted October 29 2009
Year in and year out, it’s no surprise to find talent at several of Broward County’s big school football programs. But the large-school powers don’t own a monopoly on good players. Across Broward, plenty of smaller schools are proving that though while they may not have large rosters, they too, have plenty of talent. This past weekend, two players from smaller programs made verbal commitments to major college football programs. Lineman David Perry, who plays at Class 2B University School, is headed to Miami, and David Delsoin, a lineman at Class 1B Sheridan Hills, committed to FIU. Their announcements continue to prove what small-school coaches preach constantly — good football players can be found in every classification. “When you talk about small-school football, it doesn’t necessarily mean the players are small,” Chaminade-Madonna coach Tim Tyrell said. “The athletes are just as good as if they were at a big public school. Many of them play both ways. That often means they end up being just as good or better.” Tyrell is just one of the small-school coaches enjoying success this season. Chaminade-Madonna, a Class 2B team, enters the week at 7-0 and the ranked No. 9 spot in the Sun Sentinel Broward County poll. Cornerback/wide receiver Demetri Beal has already committed to Cincinnati, and Tyrell said he expects several more of his players to commit to Division I or I-AA programs. in the coming months. Quarterback Jerrard Randall has emerged as one of Broward’s top players, rushing for 508 yards and while passing for 972. At Parkway Academy, the Panthers are also 7-0, and their defense is tops among small schools Class 3A-2A-2B-1A-1B programs, allowing a county-low of 97 yards per game. Parkway clinched the District 8-1A championship with its 47-14 win against Dade Christian on Friday. Theirs are just a few of the stories playing out at some of the smaller programs. This week, Class 3A Archbishop McCarthy could win the school’s first district title in school history with a win against Fort Lauderdale. Class 1A Calvary Christian has already secured a postseason berth. So have Class 2A American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons. The big question is: Who’s next? |
