My Teacher Rocks: And the nominees are ...
The following teachers have been nominated by their students and are in the running to be awarded the weekly winning prize. Nominate your teacher HERE! Nominees Faran Fagen, Pembroke Pines Charter High, Journalism I have known Mr. Fagen for four years now, and I have never known a teacher whose opinion I took to heart as much as his. In all the time that I've known him, Mr. Fagen has demonstrated to me his need to help others. He is constantly lending a helping hand to any staff member who wants his assistance. Instead of simply correcting our mistakes, he will work with us to make us better writers as a whole. The CHAT, our newspaper publication, is continuously improving thanks to Mr. Fagen's supportive and caring ways. He understands his students and relates to them in a way that makes the newspaper staff feel like a family. Whether it's a newspaper-related predicament or a teenage high school dilemma, Mr. Fagen is always there to give out his best advice and offer support. He's definitely a teacher that rocks! Katie Evans, senior Ms. Vivian Steele, Northeast High, Business Ms. Steele is the most dedicated lady I've ever seen; she is in the beginning stages of MS and no matter what, she still drags herself out of bed and to school every morning and makes jokes and acts like she's A-OK. Not only is she my teacher, she is also my club advisor. Yep, when everyone else goes home on Thursdays, she stays after school and helps us with club decisions and activities! The other day she even brought a homecoming T-shirt to a girl in class. Even if she doesn't win, it's good to know that I've told the world how great a teacher she is! Monika Williams, junior Mr. Edwards, Hollywood Hills High, Woodshop Mr. Edwards rocks because he is the BEST teacher in the world. He teaches everyone the different ways to process wood, and if you ever need someone to talk to, then you know he will be there for you with open arms. Not only that, he has an amazing personality, too! He has made such a huge impact on my life, and now that I am graduating this year, I don't know what I am going to do without him next year or the rest of my life. I am going to have to visit him almost everyday! I will never forget him; he was like the father that I never had. Not only is he an awesome woodshop teacher, but a great friend as well. YOU ROCK, MR. EDWARDS!!!! Elana Anderson, senior Mrs. Elizabeth Dinlocker, Dillard High, English My teacher rocks because she is the epitome of what a teacher should be. She is my constant reminder that I can do 10x better than what I think. She never stops pushing me, and although it sometimes drives me crazy, I've never felt so empowered before. She is the most brilliant woman I have ever met in my life. She's traveled the world with her husband, was a ballerina and is one of the best English teachers in the world. My favorite memory of her is when we were reading The Scarlett Letter and she found a typo, she didn't hesitate to contact the editors regarding this issue. She works so hard for our sake, making sure that we take advantage of every opportunity given to us and that we take in every aspect of the literature that has been given to us free of charge. Erica Eubanks, senior Ms. Notkin, Hallandale High, Biology Ms. Notkin is a nice teacher, and she helps us with everything. She also teaches after school. Lina Kuratomi, sophomore Mrs. Theresa Beans, Coral Springs High, Dance Ms. Beans rocks my socks because she is like a second mother. You can confide in her, she gives great advice, and she really DOES want you to succeed if, and only if, you believe you can yourself. I love her and God bless her for being there! Much love you KOOK!!!! :P Wilberthe Lareche, senior Ms. Cox, South Broward High, Math Ms. Cox rocks because she is caring. I had taken Algebra 2 Honors for two years previous to coming to her class, and I must say she is an exceptional teacher. She makes sure everyone in the class understands everything and allows us to act like high school students without being the average mean teacher. She is a single mother and is not only dedicated to her child, but also dedicated to her children at South Broward. I'm finally passing a class I never thought I could, one that everyone around me discouraged me to take again. Ms. Cox is awesome, and I have come to look at her like a big sister that I always wanted. She is relatable because she is still young. She gives great advice and will always be there for you. She is full of life and happiness, which rubs off on the nastiest kids. I love Ms.Cox, and my teacher ROCKS!!! Anitria Wright, junior Mr. Levin, Coral Glades High, English The teacher I think rocks is Mr. Levin. Here are some reasons why I believe this is true: First, Mr. Levin rocks because he's a nice teacher. If you have questions about the work he gives, he will answer them as detailed as he can. Next, Mr. Levin knows how to have a sense of humor when needed; he is a gentleman, but knows when to have a goofy side. When you make jokes, he actually laughs rather than telling you to stop talking. Last, Mr. Levin rocks because he's fun; most of the work he gives is made to be worked on in groups. Nicole Stevenson, sophomore Ms. Marcial, Hollywood Hill High, World History Ms. Marcial is the coolest teacher ever! That was my favorite class. I learned a lot in that class, and it was still fun. She loves me! I love you, Marcial! Jackie Castaneda, junior Mary Berstein, Monarch High, English Ms. Berstein is one of those teachers who has an incredibly rare gift: that of forgiveness. Whenever a student in class is sleeping or has their head down, she does not resort to the usual tactic of screaming in immense anger at the poor guy (or girl). Instead, she just calmly asks them if they are sick, or have any other kind of health problem, and allows them to leave to see the nurse, or helps them out in class (such as by using an ice pack, for instance). In addition, she does not seem to submit to the usual thoughts of pity, dislike and hatred for our current generation of music, video games and movies. She instead allows them to enjoy them as they prefer it all to be, and even joins in on the fun herself every once in a while! She is strict whenever she feels that she needs to be, but not in a manner that breeds long-term resentment. Last, but not least, she has an excellent, hilarious sense of humor, and sometimes plays music in class to help us concentrate. She also relates surprisingly interesting and enjoyable stories about her children every once in a while. Although English is a very nerve wracking, annoying and trying subject for many of my peers, Ms. Berstein makes the entire struggle a rich and immensely pleasurable one. Cameron McCaffrey, sophomore Ms. Tameka King, Piper High, English Ms. King teaches 10th grade English II Honors at Piper High. She is the most rocking teacher there is because she is the core of our motivation. She always refers to her students as scholars, wants us to behave/think as scholars and requests for us to think on a level 5. Ms. King pushes us to excel beyond our expectations, because she sees our capabilities. Her mantra is "Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!" (Claude Mckay, 1919) Ms. King is an amazing teacher who puts her all into what she does. Her classes are one, big family that pulls together when times get hard. It is an absolute enjoyment to go to her 118 classroom every day. We believe that she deserves this prize more than anyone else that we can think of. Shanna B., Hina S., Devan J., Chantell R., sophomores Dr. Singkornrat, Pompano Beach High, Biology, Anatomy, Health I've always hated science; I've just never had a knack for it. The only reason I decided to take AP biology was to hold back Chemistry for an extra year -- Dr. Singkornrat changed that. I looked forward to her class every day, and there could have been nothing more exciting than one of her lectures. She made AP biology out to be the most exciting and interesting class I've ever had. There were never problems in that class, there were never rude students, and that was because it was unanimous that "our teacher rocked." Now my class is over, and I have majestically passed the AP exam thanks to her. Dr. Singkornrat also sponsors a beach activism club that I began at my school called "Make a Wave." Any time there is a student injured at our school, she rushes to help them; any student with an unexplainable injury or ache goes and talks to Dr. Singkornrat. She is always there to help, support, educate and excite kids about learning. She has made a gigantic impact on my life, and I now plan on studying environmental science once I graduate, largely based on the interest I gained from her class. I could not have had a better teacher. Anna Fayfer, junior Ms. McNab-Hemans, Hallandale High, Reading My teacher rocks because she is funny and she incorporates learning into real-life examples. She may be strict at times, but in the end she makes us all laugh, and we learn a little something in the middle of it. She also treats us all like young adults, and I respect her for that. Michael Sciolino, freshman Mr. Richard Labocetta, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, Chemistry Not only can Mr. Labocetta teach chemistry in ways that we can understand it, but he also teaches it in the most fun ways possible. Since chemistry includes moles and mole conversions, he has us create stuffed moles (yes, the mammal). We CANNOT wait for that project. He is probably the most cool, funny, goofy guy you will ever meet. And I'm not only saying this because of the limo ride; in fact, I honestly don't care for the limo ride. Mr. Labocetta simply is the best. Hopefully, he will get the night out he deserves. You rock, Mr. Labocetta! Lena Emara, sophomore Most teachers are really boring and don't care about their students, but that is not the case with my chemistry teacher, Mr. Labocetta. He will do whatever it takes to make his students succeed. He often stays after school, and is always available to help those who need him. He is a really funny guy and actually understands us kids. You are never afraid to ask him about something; he will give you an honest answer. Every day when we leave his class, he always says, "Don't do anything that won't make your mother proud." I think he does this to get the class in a better mood because he knows school is not fun for us. He offers extra help after and before school. If you want help on understanding what you did wrong on your test, he will sit down and explain it to you. Also, whenever it is someone's birthday, it will not go unnoticed, because he makes the whole class stand up and sing that person "Happy Birthday." I really think he deserves to be recognized for all the wonderful things he does for his students. Mr. Labocetta has a way of making chemistry fun and he refers to it as "pure chemical bliss." I look forward to going to his class every day, and I am sad when it is a "no 1" day, because then I don't have his class. I am truly honored to have such an inspiring and wonderfully amazing teacher. Please help me give Mr. Labocetta the recognition he deserves. Rachael Kirk, sophomore Mr. Labocetta always brings fun and excitement into the classroom. He teaches chemistry in a fun way. He is very thorough and never leaves anyone behind. He's such a good teacher that when his lessons go after the bell, everyone still listens, unlike all of my other classes. Christopher Keeler, sophomore School is definitely not my definition of a good time, but I'm always looking forward to going to Mr. Labocetta's chemistry class. I have him first period, so he's the one that wakes me up with his bubbly personality. He always finds a way to make the subject he's teaching exciting. Not only is he a great educational influence, but he also cares about his students' grades and well-being. If he sees you are having a rough day, he'll always find a way to liven it up for you. There's never a dull moment with him. My teacher rocks in many ways! Cindy Alzate, sophomore The teacher that I believe deserves the most recognition is my teacher, Mr. Labocetta. He is such an inspiration to all of his students. While he teaches us all we need to know about chemistry, he is also teaching us many things that we will be able to use in the real world. In my mind, if a teacher can make you laugh about something, you will remember it. For example, to remember the atomic symbol for gold, he says to us " A U, get back here with my watch." Now we will never forget that gold is Au. Mr. Labocetta will not give us a test until he is absolutely positive that we are familiar with the material. He truly wants us all to succeed. Lastly, I cannot forget his favorite saying, "Don't do anything that won't make your mother proud." He says that everyday before we leave his classroom. Mr. Labocetta is an amazing teacher who deserves this prize more than any teacher out there. -- Alexa Sanabria, sophomore Have you ever had that one teacher that just makes learning enjoyable, relates to you and always has a smile on their face? I have. His name is Mr. Labocetta. Mr. Labocetta explains chemistry in a way that I can understand it, not just handing us the assignment and saying, do it. For example, did you know that if you had a mol (chemistry term 6.022 x 10^23) of paper pieces, all the papers stacked up would reach out of the solar system? Mr. Labocetta also refers to Looney Toons, and the Muppets while he's teaching so that we don't fall asleep in class (which of course teenagers are prone to do). These are just a few of the ways that Mr. Labocetta makes learning fun. Unfortunately, I only have 150 words. So remember, as Mr. Labocetta would say, "Don't do anything that wouldn't make your mother proud!" -- Danielle Murphy, sophomore I don't even really want the limo ride for myself. No, this is definitely just a letter to tell Teenlink about my chemistry teacher. It's not that Mr. Labocetta made me like the subject, it's him as a person. He greets every individual student as soon as we walk in the door, and treats us like we matter. He takes the time to answer everyone's questions and takes us seriously. Sure, he makes fun of us. But it's his priceless stories and witty comebacks that let us forgive him. Mr. Labocetta doesn't come to teach every day just to make a living. He comes every day with a grin on his face and knows that today is the day he's going to make a difference in our lives. My chemistry teacher is an intelligent, honest and funny guy. I really hope he gets this night out on the town. He deserves it. Ask anyone. Bianca Soares, sophomore Mr. Labocetta truly is the greatest teacher I have ever met. He makes everyone feel comfortable in his classroom. Since chemistry isn't easy for most of us, he helps us, and he takes it step by step. Even if one person doesn't get it, he won't get upset or angry like all my other science teachers; he'll simply smile and say, "Let me do it one more time for you." He stays after school for anyone that has extra questions as well, and that's on his own time, which really blew me out of the water. Why would a man who lives an hour and a half from the school take time out of his personal life to stay after and help a bunch of kids that don't understand? Because he's the best teacher any student could ask for, and he deserves so much more than what he gets. Madju Ouhib, sophomore Mr. Labocetta deserves to be nominated as the best teacher in Broward County. Out of my previous schools, I have not had a teacher who relates chemistry to the Looney Tunes and stays after school until 4:30 every day to help students who need help. For example, I got a "C" on one of his tests. As soon as I got my test back, he said to me, "Come after school today, and I will show you what you did wrong." After school, he re-taught me the whole subject. Also, he lives in Palm Beach, which is one hour from school. He travels that far because he loves teaching. He's not just teaching at a school for the money. Mr. Labocetta does a lot for his students and his school. It's about time someone showed their appreciation for him, and that is why he deserves a night out in a limo. Michael Koretsky, sophomore Mr. Labocetta is the best teacher you could have. He actually makes learning fun. It's not like you walk out of his class going, "Man, I love this class, but what the heck did I just learn in it?" It makes you go "Man, I love this class, and I actually know what I just did. You don't find many like him. He's not doing it to earn money, he's doing it to help us earn money in the future. Brandon Shapiro, sophomore Mr. Labocetta: when you say that name to the 10th grade students who have him for chemistry, they will probably say, "Oh the crazy, eccentric teacher with all of the stuffed moles in his classroom?" But, that is not the only thing that comes to mind when his name is said around the school. Mr. Labocetta's teaching style, though not your standard 'lecture, notes, homework' routine, shows the students a fun way to grasp concepts in a form that teenagers can understand. He is comical, always telling funny jokes to lighten the mood. I can honestly say that Mr. Labocetta has one of the biggest senses of humor in the whole school. I can tell that he will be an influential character in my academic life. Megan Bangert, sophomore Mr. Labocetta, I think, one of the best teacher at MSD. I'm in his third period, and he is definitely the highlight of my day. He makes chemistry a fun subject, but at the same time he teaches us the subject and he does it very well. He also has a great sense of humor; usually teachers don't laugh with you, but he will laugh around with you and joke. Honestly, Mr. Labocetta is the smartest, most intellectual teacher I have ever had. He showed us some of his "genius" and it was the hardest math/science I have ever seen. After all of his classes he says "Don't do anything that won't make your mother proud" I live by this. One day he will be President. That is why Mr. Labocetta rocks and should get that night out in a limo. Nick Storm, sophomore When I was in the eighth grade, my older brother had told me about his favorite teacher. Someone who was firm and passionate about teaching chemistry but also had a great sense of humor that made school and learning a lot easier and fun. It was hard to believe such a great and energetic teacher existed until this year, when I got him as my chemistry teacher. There's no doubt in my mind that Mr. Labocetta is the best teacher for this luxurious day out. Throughout our academic life, teens have always labeled our teachers as "too strict" or "cool but we never do anything." Collectively, I can honestly say that Mr. Labocetta is the only teacher I can label as "cool, fun, energetic, down-to-earth and firm with learning." He's the only teacher I have ever had that brings life to the subject he teaches, which makes me strive to do the best I possibly can. In his class it's not just about grades or getting things done it's about learning a more meaningful lesson that will help us in life not just in high school. Alise Ramirez, sophomore Mr. Labocetta is a caring, funny and highly intelligent person. These characteristics are wonderful, but a personal life experience of mine made me feel like he should be recognized. A short while ago, it seemed like everything in my life was wrong: grades, friends and family. Mr. Labocetta saw that I was struggling and offered me help in chemistry. I arrived to his classroom after school, and he sensed something was wrong. He talked to me and helped me in the areas I struggled in. Everything else in my life felt wrong, but knowing someone cared for me made me feel joyful. Mr. Labocetta says witty phrases like, "Au, come back with my gold watch." I learn so much in class, and Mr. Labocetta makes all his students leave his class with a smile by announcing his famous saying "Don't do anything that won't make your mother proud!" Chelsea Hale Mrs. Mary Foster, Plantation High, English My teacher rocks because she has been at my school for 33 years. Every year students come back to visit her because she's so wonderful. Every year her students e-mail her to tell her how much she has influenced their lives and how much they appreciated her care for them. Mrs. Foster has read us tons of e-mails from former students that have become successful due to her encouragement. Many of her students have become very prominent figures in their field. She recently read one from a past student who is now writing a book. Mrs. Foster is an example for all teachers to follow she deserves recognition. Keandra Gray, senior Mrs. Baker, Plantation High, English My teacher rocks because she has so much skill. Mrs. Baker is my favorite teacher at Plantation. Although some students don't like her, I do. She is strict in her teaching and she knows her stuff. Mrs. Baker has been teaching for longer than I've been born, and she's pretty darn good at it. I really, really, really hope that Mrs. Baker wins this contest. Keandra Gray, senior Mr. James Mulhern, Stranahan High, English, Creative Writing You know those classes that are over, and you have no idea where the time went? Well, Mr. Mulhern's classes are like that. At first I thought he called us all scholars because he couldn't remember our names, but then I figured out its more of an empowerment thing. You become a scholar when you're called a scholar. What's hilarious is that the trend caught stamina and you can hear scholar peppered through many a conversation on the patio, science buildings and fourth hall. The coolest thing about Mulhern is that he truly loves his job, even if he flies from the premises two minutes after the bell rings. Every moment in his class, you are learning, even if you don't realize it. He is the teacher that isn't afraid to laugh, tell crazy stories and inspire you all at once. I never had a teacher who helped me enjoy classics. I used to read the "romantic classics" Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters. Mulhern's class showed me that Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman had merit also. I can read those things and get it. "There comes a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance and imitation is suicide" Emerson. I learned that in junior year. I learned to embrace my creativity, become a better reader, writer and person. "The more I link, the better I think, the smarter I become" Mulhern. I'm much smarter because of this dude. He rocks. Yveka Pierre, senior Mr. Jason Jackson, Stranahan High, Biology, Integrated Science My teacher rocks for many, many reasons! I think that Mr. Jackson rocks simply because he makes learning fun. For example, unlike other teachers, he takes learning to an entirely different level which is very interactive. Also, because he takes time out of his busy schedule to make sure that we understand. For instance, instead of making us read long chapters in a biology book, he makes excellent interactive PowerPoints that breaks things down for us to help us understand and comprehend. Because honestly, as a Bio student, its hard! So I think that's excellent for him to take the time to make PowerPoints for us. Another thing is that when we do experiments, he makes sure that they are interesting to us and that we are actually learning from the experiment we are doing. But above all, I think that for a teacher to actually ROCK, they have to care a whole lot about their students and whether they learn or not. Because there are actually teachers who just give students chapters out of a textbook and expect them to read and understand. So to sum it all up, I think that Mr. Jackson rocks because he takes learning to a whole other level. Ashley Madry, freshman Ms. Katherine Vellis, Deerfield Beach, English Ms. Vellis rocks because she is one of the few teachers in our community today who is here for the children. She is not only here to dictate and always be right, she is here to teach us and in turn, she learns herself. Unlike many teachers today, she is not focused on always being right, because she understands that teachers are human and we all make mistakes. Ms. Vellis is an awesome teacher who cares for the well-being of her students and takes time out of her schedule every day to make sure we fully understand whatever we may be learning. She is not only there to boss us around; she likes to have fun with us as well. Whether it is poetry, prose, vocabulary or a play, she is always there to make sure that her students understand. That is why my teacher, Ms. Vellis, rocks! Ericka Horne, senior Mr. Fernandes Jones, Hallandale High, UTAP II, UTAP I, Government & Economics, Psychology There is no better teacher out there than Mr. Fernandes Jones. I have known him since my freshman year in high school. He rocks because he's the best teacher ever. If you need help in something, he is always willing to help you out. I think that he stands out at my school because he's one of the few teachers who cares about your future. He's very dedicated as a teacher and puts in 100 percent effort in everything he does. When a student in his class is sleeping, he doesn't wake them up to yell at them; he asks them what's wrong. He's one of those teachers who understands what you are going through. He always has a smile on his face as you walk into his classroom. Even when my morning is horrible, I know that once I get into his class, my day will be awesome. He wants all of his students to succeed and he never gives up on them. He encourages them to work harder. Mr. Fernandes Jones rocks! He's the best above all the rest. Candace Silveira Mrs. Rheingold, Cypress Bay High, English Mrs. Rheingold is so lively and helps me a lot. She also listens to people's problems and makes the class an open atmosphere for us to express ourselves without feeling discouraged. Lincoln Washington Edwards Mrs. Rheingold teacher rocks because she teaches us great things. For instance, punctuation formulas, vocabulary and tips on how to write better essays. She is so much fun, and I love her. She has an ebullient sense of humor, and she is extremely understanding. She helps me with whatever I need. She is always there for me. Zach Green Mrs. Rheingold has an ebullient sense of humor and is extremely understanding. Whenever I have a problem in school or even outside of school, I go to her for comfort and for her advice. She has a congenial personality, and her teaching skills are effective, useful and productive. She has taught me a plethora of important writing skills that I definitely believe will help me in the future. She is an all-around awesome, respectful and exciting teacher who possesses an amazing teaching ability. Lara Sepulchre Everyday I can't wait for the clock to strike 11:36 p.m. This is when my English class begins. This year I love English much more than just for my love of the subject. This year I have a phenomenal English teacher who loves to teach and loves her job so much. This passion for teaching allows me to appreciate the education I get every day on a whole new level. Mrs. Rheingold is a teacher who truly exemplifies the qualities of an amazing teacher. Mrs. Rheingold goes above the call of duty on a daily basis. Claire Aronson No words can fully describe Mrs. Rheingold. She has enhanced my writing to a level I can't even imagine. If it wasn't for her lessons on punctuation formulas, I would still be writing like an eighth grader. Mrs. Rheingold is a very enthusiastic person, and this makes learning so much easier. If it wasn't for her exciting new ways to test us on vocabulary, I wouldn't have such an excess of vocabulary in my speech. Her teaching style is very unique, but it somehow sticks in my brain. I am grateful for her. I'd rather have her any day over an old textbook teacher. Mrs. Rheingold rocks my socks. Ronald Quan My teacher, Mrs. Rheingold, rocks because she is a great teacher and makes the class feel comfortable. She is always fair and helps students in every aspect of the class. Also, her eloquence and congeniality makes every student feel as if school is actually fun. Her methods of teaching are revered within the entire English department at Cypress Bay High School. She doesn't barrage students with overwhelming information. She paces herself with teaching and makes sure students understand all the activities. When we are reading, writing or talking about our work, we don't have to stress about all the work we have to do. We are very lucky to have such an amazing teacher. Guy Pagan My teacher rocks because she really does! She always goes the extra mile to help her students. She cares more about what the students learn, and not what grades they get or what score they get on their FCAT. That is really important, because most teachers today only care about that icky word that starts with an "F" and ends with a "CAT." In class she teaches her students topics that matter. She teaches her students to be good to each other and not to judge people. She is not just teaching English; she's teaching her students to be better people. If that doesn't deserve a night out on the town, I don't know what does. Alyssa Campione Every day I look forward to Mrs. Rheingold's class. The way she teaches is very enriching and helpful. Mrs. Rheingold knows how the teenage mind comprehends the curriculum; therefore, she knows how to appeal to students my age. With her congenial personality, there is never a dull moment in her class, and every day we learn a copious amount of new things. I have never had such an entertaining and informative class. Her heart is one of warmth, understanding and ability to listen without judging. She deserves thanks for her dedication to teaching. Some teachers just teach for a job; this is not the case with Mrs. Rheingold. She teaches with passion that changes students' lives. She certainly has changed mine. Mrs. Rheingold deserves to win the My Teacher Rocks contest. Christina Duffy My teacher rocks because she teaches English in a fun and interesting way that keeps me attentive in the class and never gets old. Her congenial matter, witty charms and copious amounts of cute jewelry (of which she wears a different piece every day), keeps the classroom environment enjoyable and unique. English is one of my favorite subjects, and I am overjoyed that I have this teacher to teach me. Zoe Mroz Mrs. Rheingold is the epitome of coolness. From the moment I walked into her class, I could feel a good aura. The bright pink jumps off the walls and into all our hearts. Her multi-colored hair gives her the spunk and young appearance that makes it easy for her to relate to us. Class goes by so quickly when I'm having fun. We often talk about eccentric topics that one may overlook from time to time. This forces us to look at other point of views, which is a necessity when writing about tough essay topics that do not influence our lives. Making us expand our horizons makes us better writers, which is the overall goal. So please, Mrs. Rhiengold truly does deserve to win, because she really does rock. Chelsea Mrs. Rheingold, the best teacher I've ever had in my ten years of time-consuming schooling, deserves a limo ride for the rest of her teaching years and much more. Not only does she care about our education, but she also is always out there looking for our wanting-to-do-no-work butts. Mrs. Rheingold cares about us like an old ill man in need of a family-member companion. She's even willing to eat lunch with her students! She is the type of teacher that goes that extra step for us. One of the million great features I love about her teaching is the type of methods she applies every day in class. It is a fun class, and at the same time I learn a lot of writing techniques, such as figurative language, vocabulary and punctuation formulas. Daniela Lancara Mrs. Rheingold has a great sense of humor and always has an ebullient smile on her face. She never fails to keep the class interesting, and I look forward to coming to her class every day. Mrs. Rheingold is always willing to help me when I need it. I learn an enormous amount of information in her class. I feel she has helped me prepare for the SAT with all the vocabulary words she has taught me. Usually I think English is a boring subject, but not with Mrs. Rheingold. She has a loving and caring aura that envelopes her. Mrs. Rheingold is the best! Colin Cerruto I have the most amazing teacher in the world. All throughout school, I hated the subject English. It was not to until a couple months ago when I got into Mrs. Rheingold's class that I started to love the subject. She teaches in a fun, exiting way, but most importantly, she is a caring and understanding teacher. She will always be there when you need her. I am sure that Ms. Rheingold will prepare me extremely well for college and the SATs. I have learned so much in her class: vocabulary, punctuation formulas, writing and how to become a better a person. I am very thankful for having such a fantastic teacher! Andrea Molina Mrs. Rheingold teaches us very well. I anticipate the period of the school day when I get to stroll into her classroom and begin my larger-than-life learning experience. My knowledge has increased so much over this school year. I have learned so much from her about grammar skills. She teaches us everything from punctuation formulas to proper writing traits and skills. We have several different forms of learning that enhance our writing abilities. We use writing exercises, practice essay prompts, Internet blogging and packets. We practice a different punctuation formula everyday. We also get a set of vocabulary words every week. We have read the book Night, and we are currently reading Of Mice And Men. I have learned more about English than a world-renowned chef learns about the art of food preparation. Mrs. Rheingold is one of the best teachers and also my second favorite teacher that I have ever had. Kevin Mrs. Rheingold has the ability to relate real-world examples to the English language. She truly exudes the expertise known only to the most sophisticated of intellectuals. Plato, who formally invented the present education system, would smile at the care and capability my teacher treats her students with. We are truly blessed to experience the level of teaching she presents to the education system. Ryan Terrell My teacher Mrs. Rheingold has taught me so much over the past couple months of school. I have learned to improve my writing as well as use more sophisticated words when writing my sentences. I think I have learned more in Mrs. Rheingold's English class than in any English class I have ever taken. Not only have my writing skills improved, but Mrs. Rheingold has also taught me how to use the correct sentence formulas so my sentences are always correct. Mrs. Rheingold is truly my favorite English teacher of all time. Steven Bolotin Mrs. Rheingold is an amazing teacher. All of her techniques are original in every possible way. Her personality is always positive, which gives her students the same feeling. She develops great friendships with her students. I think I've become friendlier with her every time I see her. In past years I've come to notice that English teachers are sort of fruity and come off as geeks, but not Mrs. Rheingold. She goes on the top 5 favorite teachers. I will continue to take her classes. Anthony Zummmo Mrs. Rheingold is always there to lend a helping hand. Whenever I don't understand an assignment or I have a question on my homework, she takes the time to explain it to me, no matter how long it takes. She teaches us new writing strategies every day, gives us SAT words to study and introduces us to books that expand our knowledge and vocabulary. Her class is not only fun and entertaining, but it also prepares us for college. The writing strategies we learn in her class will also help in the future when applying for a job or writing a resume. I am so glad I have Mrs. Rheingold as my teacher, because without her, I wouldn't know the difference between a simile and a metaphor. Mrs. Rheingold truly rocks! Jillian Baach Mrs. Rheingold is the epitome of English teachers around the nation. She has acquired copious amounts of knowledge and has been generous enough to envelop us with her endless wisdom. I feel proud to have her as my teacher, because she makes learning something that I look foreword to not something I groan about. I appreciate what she does for a living, and I'm sure that if it weren't for her love for high school teens, she would be off teaching at Harvard. But I respect her for putting up with us, and that is why I think that she should win this contest. Justin Baker Robinson Mrs. Rheingold is the best teacher at my school. I enjoy her class a lot, because she makes it fun. We do a copious amount of different activities, like blogging on "rheinspace" and dailies that actually make us better writers. She has helped me with my writing so much, and I feel like I am going to get a 6 on my FCAT writing because of her. For some random reason, my friend Justin and I call her "coach" because she is our English coach. She is deserving of the reward, because she stays up late grading our work for us, and always does a good job. Matt Mrs. Rheingold walks into a school that has more than 5,000 kids every day with a smile as big and warming as the morning sun. Every student in the school knows who she is, even if they did not have her as a teacher. She has this attitude that is not like regular teachers. Not only is she an intelligent teacher and authority figure, but she is also a friend to all. Everyone loves her and learns a lot from her. One thing that is special about her is the connection she has with her students. Mrs. Rheingold connects with the special needs of teens. In fact, the special needs children are good and work hard throughout the week just to get to go visit her classroom. She's like their prize. I am a new student at the school, and I already feel so comfortable with her. I know that I can go to her if I ever have a problem. Mrs. Rheingold has open arms towards all her students; anyone who has her as a teacher will love her. She becomes your favorite teacher. I have moved a lot, and I have to say that I have never met such a great teacher like Mrs. Rheingold. Even if she does not win, she will still be the No. 1 teacher to 5,000 kids. Elaina Dudek Mrs. Rheingold is the teacher I think that rocks. She is the epitome of an English teacher. I have learned a lot from being in her class. At the beginning of the year, I can remember when I never knew the difference between similes and metaphors; also, I never even heard of what pronoun-antecedent agreement and subject-verb agreement were before learning it in her class. The immense knowledge that Mrs. Rheingold has fascinates me every day when I come to class. I am sure that if she didn't love to teach teenagers, she would be teaching in a college or university. Mrs. Rheingold always strives to motivate us to do our best, and we always do with her encouragement. Mrs. Rheingold is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and she's stellar. Kevin Thomas Mrs. Rheingold's innovative and inspired approach to teaching exemplifies the ability to think openly something most teachers today are lacking. Some may consider her eccentric or even go so far as to refer to her as zany, but at the end of the day, few have left her classroom empty-handed. Whether it is the ever-changing formation of her classroom, or her varying personalities, Mrs. Rheingold never fails to hold her respective classes' attention. She infuses life into the most tired of assignments, including grammatical worksheets and tedious essays. Perhaps Mrs. Rheingold's most commendable characteristic is her focus on social matters and civic duties. Her choices in literature reflect her concern for humankind in general, and she encourages her students to discuss and analyze situations involving such horrors as genocide and the overall wickedness of people's actions in relation to other races, genders and religions. Mrs. Rheingold deserves to win this award because she continuously expands her own horizons, as well as those of her students. Alida Miranda Mrs. Rheingold is the type of teacher that one is lucky to find once in a lifetime. I feel overly blessed for having been placed in Mrs. Rheingold's class, for the light of her ceaseless smile makes every day a little sweeter. Her charm and charisma make her class and everyone around her shine, and her undying love for teaching becomes evident every time she stands up in front of the classroom to explain another one of her creative assignments. I don't believe I have ever seen myself improve in such a substantial way as I have this year with the help of the brilliant Mrs. Rheingold. My writing has blossomed in ways I never thought possible before I met the one teacher who would redefine the English language for me and revive my love for it. I am forever thankful for all of what this admirable and stellar human being has done for me. My teacher rocks! Andrea Vasquez Mrs. Rheingold is one in a million. She devotes her time to her students making them out-of-this-world writers. Mrs. Rheigold is not only an outstanding teacher, but she also cares about her students. Some teachers don't take the time or effort to read their pupils' work; however, she can't help herself. Mrs. Rheingold's ultimate desire is to watch her student's writing blossom from a modest seed to an exquisite flower. My knowledge of the English language has grown like the aroma of freshly baked cookies filling my boxy kitchen. Entering her class, I had not been exposed to sentence formulas, figurative language or the use of hyphens. I can now proudly state, I know how to properly use all of these writing skills. Mrs. Rheingold has taught me a mind-boggling amount of information. There is no way I can repay her for what she has done for me, but I hope this reward will show her a small token of my appreciation. Nicole Bejany Ms. Shayla Bullard, South Plantation High, Reading Ms. Shayla Bullard rocks because from the moment I walked into her class, she seems like a teacher who really cares about her students. She talks to us so many times that we are just like her little brothers or sisters. I just want to see Ms. Bullard keep her head up and do her job. We are going to do the same, and I'm out like class of 2009 in May. Craig Scott Ms. Birch, Hallandale High, English Ms. Birch rocks because she is one of the best teachers in Hallandale, and she makes English fun and exciting. O'Neil Heslop Ms. Hankerson, Hallandale High, Algebra Ms. Hankerson rocks because she is the best teacher in Hallandale High. She always has a learning atmosphere in her classroom, and she makes algebra fun and totally understandable. Not everyone loves algebra, but it you have her as a teacher, you will fall in love with math. She is also one of the sponsors of a new program we have at the school called C.S.I. O'Neil Heslop Mrs. Wernersbach, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Geography, History What can I say that can fit into this small box? Mrs. Wernersbach is by far the best teacher I ever had. She makes me laugh, happy and learn all at the same time. She does what no teacher has done before, because she is original. If she want us to take notes, she will give us the notes on a PowerPoint, overhead or on handouts, so she can change it up a bit. She makes them so interesting, that we have fun while taking the notes. If anyone in her class does not get the subject, she will slow down, go over it again and then discuss it until that person understands it. If I did not have her this year, I probably would have never learned so much about any country, region or religion ever! I believe that Mrs. Wernersbach is the BEST teacher in the county, nay, in the WORLD! I don't feel that I said everything that is needed to know about this amazing teacher, but she is definitely a teacher who rocks! Shane Randel Mrs. Wernersbach rocks because she's cool. Trevor Hill Mrs. Matthews, Coconut Creek High, North Lauderdale, Science, English & Law Studies Mrs. Matthews is very nice and funny. Also, she shows she cares more than the average teacher! Mrs. Matthews reminds me of my own mother; she is a phenomenal and intelligent women, and I know all her students have a predilection to have her as a teacher now and throughout the rest of the semester! Besides all of those great qualities, Mrs. Mattews is also a good listener, down-to-earth and easy to talk to. Cool teacher! Ashley Jean Pierre Mr. Mullens, McArthur High, Geography Mr. Mullens rocks because he not only teaches us geography, but when there is time he also teacher history, politics and math. He also does a lot for the school, like announces at the football games (GO MUSTANGS!). He also helps out when you need a hand, like this one time I had broken my mp3 screen, and he helped me tape it back together. He at times may push us hard, but that's because he wants us all to be the best we can be. In his 3rd period class, everyone knows each other and is willing to help each other, like 32 brothers and sisters. They are not kids or students, but a family. If you spend one day in his class, it will change the way you look at classroom. So what else is there to say about Mr. Mullens? I would say he is the best geography/history/politics/math teacher there is. - Michael Estevez Joseph Vallone, Plantation High, Physics Mr. Vallone does so much for our school. He even started a rocketry program, which he is now formulating to become our school's magnet program. Erin Shoemaker Mr. Tortoriello, South Broward High, American History Mr. Tortoriello rocks because he makes his class interesting and fun by giving very creative examples of the stories we are studying, such as the Civil War, the American Revolution and about the important American historical figures. He connects with the students not only as an educator but also as a friend. It is easy for us to talk to him about the things we do not understand in his class or we are confused with. I think he should be in "My Teacher Rocks" because he really is trying to make a difference in young students' lives. He is not a teacher that a student will forget. H is the kind of teacher that you can always remember as someone who made your American history class unforgettable and full of interesting stuff about our country's past. Claudia ------ Mr. Frank Gulla, Hollywood Hills High, Calculus A Massachusetts Institute of Technology student at 15 years old, a mathematical genius known throughout Hollywood Hills High School, and pretty much the best teacher any student can ever be taught by: This is Mr. Frank Gulla. He has always surprised me with his life stories and all of his cookbook recipes on making calculus fun and easy. Mr. Gulla has been at Hollywood Hills for about 40 years now; imagine 2/3 of your life spent on teaching over thousands of students one of the toughest subjects there is. He has been Teacher of the Year more than once, and I say, "Cheers to the man who truly changed my life and I'm sure other students' as well." And while he isn't teaching calculus, he is retelling his childhood stories that teach students very important lessons in life. Since I love math with a passion, this man is definitely my role model and inspiration. Edward Pino, junior Mrs. Canell, Monarch High, Reading All my life, I have struggled with reading. Many teachers have worked with me, yet reading was still difficult for me. I stayed behind in reading because of this. Mrs. Canell made reading fun for me. She gives us rewards for doing well. Also, she has the patience to help us. Mrs. Canell is very dedicated to teaching. This is what I must have needed, because I now read better than ever. I also now enjoy reading. I didn't before. We do lots of hands-on stuff. We make posters and get to draw pictures to go with the stories. We also do graphs and computer work. Mrs. Canell is always encouraging me and the other students to do our best. This is why I feel Mrs. Canell deserves to win My Teacher Rocks. I'm not alone in this. Many other students feel the same way. We all want her to win. She truly deserves to win. Jessica Pettit, sophomore Mr. Coyle, Monarch High, History Monarch High School is a school filled with extremely good teachers; however there is one in particular who is, in my opinion, better than the rest: Mr. Coyle. Mr. Coyle is an 11th grade history teacher who not only is a great person, but is also probably the only teacher who can actually make history fun and exciting. Mr. Coyle is not just a great teacher because he can make history fun. He is a person who you can admire. He can teach many different subjects such as science, math and writing. Many students in this school love Mr. Coyle because he is an open-minded person and will accept anyone for who they are and what they believe. He doesn't look down on people because of the way they look or just because they are teenagers. Honestly, I have never met a person who treats anyone just the way they would want to be treated: with honesty, respect and kindness. Hopefully when I am older, if I ever decide to become a teacher, I will teach and be a person just like him. Luisa Machado, junior Mrs. Pickman, Monarch High, Math ESE My teacher Mrs. Pickman is a very good teacher. She helps a lot of people even during her planning period, because she cares a lot about the kids. All of the kids love her. Even after they graduate, students still come back and see her. Mrs. Pickman teaches a lot of stuff we are going to need in life. Even when we don't want to do our work, she talks to us and helps us. She helps all of her students to succeed. When we need help with the work she gives us, she helps us by explaining it to us, and then she allows us to try it again. That is how I learned so much in her math class; there was so much that I didn't know. I'm happy that I'm in her class now because if I wasn't, I would not know half of the things I know now. I hope there is more class work that she can show me how to do. Christopher Garza, freshman Mrs. Teresa Young, Plantation High, Peer Counseling As Mrs. Young emits a radiating smile every morning and afternoon, you would never guess that she deals with troubled students, couples and faculty at Plantation High School. Not only is she that "shoulder to lean on," but she is also that person who will talk to you anytime, even if it means leaving her class to comfort you. She takes that extra step to make sure all her students are doing well in every class and checks up on their grades after every marking period. Mrs. Young isn't just a teacher to the rest of the students in the Peer Counseling Program and to me; she is actually a guide for all of us. She continually asks us what we want to do with our lives after high school, where we see ourselves in ten years, and how we plan on getting there. Although I had to drop the Peer Counseling Program this year, Mrs. Young still enforces her report card policy and checks up on me to see how my college application status and standardized testing are coming along. There is no doubt that Mrs. Young rocks. You can't beat her. Don't try. Rhodane Brown, senior Mr. Roopchand, McArthur High, World History Honors As I sit in my first period class, I can only imagine what will happen next hour. All I know is that it will be awesome, even though I didn't know anyone in there before this year. It is all because of one man: Mr. Robin Roopchand. Thinking back at the times before I had his class, I felt so empty, almost as if I knew nothing. That's how much I've learned from this teacher, not even counting how he has inspired me. He is my ultimate favorite, and I think he deserves this, along with the Nobel Peace Prize. I love you, Roop! Rachael Ward, sophomore Melissa Loy, South Broward High, TV Production, English My teacher rocks because she traveled from Michigan all the way to Florida. She deals with hundreds of students, from shy ninth graders to wild seniors, for 180 days out of the year. What makes her stand out is that she teaches more than one subject. While preparing ninth graders for the FCAT writes, she is also in charge of the morning show and the fantastic video yearbook. Kiera Lewis, senior Mrs. Matthew, Hallandale High, Reading My teacher rocks because she understands the issues we face as teens. She helps us succeed, and tries to simplify things in a way we would understand. She treats us like individuals, not just students. That is why my teacher rocks. Lisbeth Mora, sophomore My teacher rocks because she understands our issues and problems. She helps us understand whatever we may not get. She is just like a teen, and treats us equally in class. My teacher just rocks my socks! Llynet B. Gispert, sophomore Mrs. Bailey-Dix, Monarch Knight High, ESE Mrs. Bailey-Dix is a good caring teacher. She makes everything fun. She's very funny and exciting. Her lessons are fun so we can pay attention easier. She teaches several subjects like math, reading and life skills. Mrs. Bailey-Dix teaches you skills you will use in life, like how to deal with your money and bills: the most important things you need to know in life. She is a very confident teacher, always smiling and nicely dressed at school. You can talk to her about anything and she will show her concern and be very helpful. She is honest to everyone. Students come to visit her all the time, even those who graduated years ago. She likes to take us on interesting educational field trips like going to the mall and doing some activities there. I think she is the best teacher out there, and everyone should know that. If you pick Mrs. Bailey-Dix, you are making a good choice. Trust me on that! Mrs. Bailey-Dix rocks! Samantha Kenwood, junior My favorite teacher is Ms. Bailey-Dix because she cares about us. She makes sure you understand what you are doing and cares a lot about our education. Her lessons stick to us like glue, and we all appreciate all of the help she has given us. She has a lot of patience when dealing with our attitudes. She keeps everybody on track. Ms. Bailey-Dix is the first teacher I ever had who actually cared about her students. No one cares about her students like Ms. Bailey-Dix does. She has respect for all her students as long as they respect her. She is the type of teacher who gets along with everybody. She has a beautiful smile and likes to dress nicely. I'm glad I have her for a teacher. She keeps us out of trouble and makes sure we are doing the right thing. She really changed me a lot. Before I came here, I was really bad. I really want to thank Ms. Bailey for helping me turn my life around. Berry Sanders, senior Ms. Griffin, Monarch High, Health/ PE Ms. Griffin actually puts words in terms you can understand. She also makes sure that you learn in her class no matter what. Whether you are in her class with 30 or more kids with a few that are ESE and ESOL kids, she always finds time to help you. If there is a test that she gives you that is too hard, she will review your test to see what areas you had trouble in and she will make another test for you that you can comprehend focusing on those areas. The projects that she gives us are very hard, but she always finds a way to make it understandable. In CPR and First Aid we learned to have fun and work at the same time. She's a really fun and cool teacher. She makes everyone laugh and if someone is having trouble in or outs of school, she tries to help them out. She isn't here for the money; she's here for the kids because she loves them. - Coleman Maynard, senior Mrs. Tzaberry, Coral Springs High, Reading My teacher rocks because she helps me with everything every Monday. She teaches us new vocabulary words to prepare us for tests. When I took my BAT test, I recognized a lot of the words she had taught me. I later went up to her and said, "Thank you Mrs. T." I had a big smile on my face because I couldn't believe I that knew what those words meant. She can be tough on us sometimes, but now I understand why. Thanks Mrs. Tzaberry. You're a great teacher.
