Two vintage streetlamps illuminated the magnificent, towering set depicting a New York streetscape with a tepid glow. Vibrant melodies permeated the stage as members from two gangs labeled the Jets and the Sharks entered close proximity on disputed territory. A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts combined grandiose technical aspects, magnificent choreography, and stellar singing and acting in their production of West Side Story.

After reluctantly joining his former Jets gang members at a school dance, Tony becomes bedazzled with love for Maria, who he learns is the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the rival Sharks gang. Maria later beseeches Tony to stop the fighting between the two gangs. When Tony goes to the site of the rumble in attempts to prevent a brawl, he witnesses the killing of his friend, Riff, and subsequently kills Bernardo. Maria finds comfort with Tony, who is killed while in her embrace.

Immediately upon viewing the stage, a spectacular three-story set provides a fitting and masterfully crafted backdrop to the action of the show. Balconies, windows, garage doors, and walls that unfold to reveal various scenes display the extreme detail and quality of the set construction. Realistic finishes and props enhance the believability of each set piece. Beautiful costumes constructed by students added pockets of color and contrast to the earth tones of the set pieces. From illuminated windows to starlit scenes, the lighting truly displayed excellent creativity and realism.

Impeccable timing and unity amongst the dancers promoted the effective execution of the intricate and advanced choreography prevalent throughout West Side Story. Sophisticated vocal tone and blend was epitomized during the group numbers. The chemistry between the Jets gang members, especially between Derek Martin as Riff and Shaun Fischer as Action, created a superb sense of believability to the performance. Even during the fierce and tough scenes depicting Jets gang meetings, the mood was punctuated by the humorous and phenomenally focused and characterized performance by Angelica Amato as Anybodys.

Superior vocals and acting by Marina Pires as Anita resulted in one of the most memorable performances of the evening. Anita captivated attention each moment she was on stage as a result of fabulous facial expressions and stellar characterization. Riff, as portrayed by Derek Martin, added great dynamic and solidity during his scenes. Although Lindsay Spanganthal was only the featured soloist in the number "Somewhere," her extraordinary vocals were the highlight of the performance. Tessa Assari as the lead role of Maria created a classic character through her sophisticated, reserved, yet whimsical portrayal of the love-struck Puerto Rican. Her wonderful performance was accentuated by Daniel Kopystanski as her lover Tony. Controlled and debonair vocals enhanced his portrayal of the modern Romeo pursuing his love.

From the distinct and realistic accents to the expertly crafted set and costumes, Dreyfoos' production of the infamous West Side Story maintained a high caliber of excellence. Exceptional student involvement only enhanced the professional and captivating production. Stellar vocals, complex dancing, and authentic acting by the Dreyfoos students fashioned a memorable and outstanding production of West Side Story.
