Blinding lights, the rush of energy drinks and the threat of broken bones: Bob Burnquist faces an 80-foot drop at his feet. Swallowing adrenaline, he steps off the ledge onto his skateboard to switch ollie-180 over the Staples Center's mega ramp gap and follows through with a backside-360 over the quarter pipe, landing himself a gold medal. There is only one place in the world where athletes with a passion for boards and wheels come together every year for four days to compete in the most extreme event of their careers: the X Games. And X Games 3D: The Movie, an ESPN film, captures the excitement of the games in a 3D documentary for audiences nationwide. How extreme is that? The film features Burnquist, Danny Way, Ricky Charmichael, Kyle Loza, Shaun White and Travis Pastrana, all men with one thing in common: an adrenaline disorder. Taking their trades to new levels, these boarders, riders and drivers push the limits of the human psyche and physicality, coming to Los Angeles with new tricks each year. The featured medalists are interviewed in their natural environments, atop half pipes and beside motocross trails. Their vocabulary consists of "dude," "sick" and "legit" and they drink Monster like water. Their lives are consumed by the thrill of "big air," creating "creatures of freedom and flight," and obsession with the progression of their skills and abilities. With Charmichael flying motorcycles 33 feet in the air, White taking snowboarding to new heights, and Pastrana drifting rally cars like butter in front of your very eyes, this one-week feature film leaves you holding your breath, crossing your fingers and wincing in pain. |
