West Broward duo dominates Sell, Oliver cruise to wins; St. Thomas sweeps team titles By Craig Davis Staff Writer Posted October 30 2009
PLANTATION --
For two seniors on a mission, dominance at districts was merely a catalyst toward greater ambitions. As in every race this season, West Broward's Tyler Sell ruled the distance events in Thursday's District 10-3A championships at Central Park Aquatic Complex. Leading all the way, Sell cruised to wins in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.15 and the 500 in 4:39.03. Meanwhile, West Broward's Tiffany Oliver was equally impressive in commanding the sprints, timing 24.44 in the 50 freestyle and 52.91 in the 100. "I've never won state before. I'm not going to lie, my aspiration this year is to win in the 200 and 500. It would be a great way to finish off my high school career," said Sell, whose sister Chloe was second last week in the BCAA cross country meet. Sell, state runner-up in the 500 last year, says he believes his chances of pulling off the double at state in two weeks are "realistic" because of the strength he gained through weight training. Oliver has competed at state the past three seasons, placing fourth in both sprints last year. Her only loss this season was in the 50 at the county meet. "I'm hoping to win this year," she said. "I'm going to keep training and have fun." Damaris Iriondo of St. Thomas Aquinas won the 200 and 500 freestyle in the girls' competition. Sometimes overlooked, divers figured prominently in St. Thomas winning the girls' title as the Raiders took the top four places. Marina Nazario had a 48.5-point margin over teammate Carly Alexander, and Amanda Habig and Bianca Santos followed to give St. Thomas 68 points. Nazario, a junior, knew she was on her way to victory after nailing a reverse pike for a 9.5 midway through the competition. "It was great, it was fun and it was encouraging for what is going to happen in regionals and maybe state," Nazario said of St. Thomas' Fab Four finish. John Toomey overwhelmed the boys' field with 402 points, giving Northeast a district diving champ for the fifth year in a row. He is also continuing a family tradition as two older siblings also dove for Northeast. The St. Thomas boys gave the Raiders a sweep of the team titles while qualifying 12 swimmers to regionals. Seven of them are freshmen or sophomores. Boys' SwimmingDistrict 10-3AST.
