Fort Lauderdale --
Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson had mixed emotions about his team's 14-13 victory Friday night against Boyd Anderson in a spring football game at Lockhart stadium. "It was a little sloppy, but a "W' is a 'W'," Thompson said. "But I was very impressed with the way we were able to maintain our composure with so many of our players tired. Our conditioning really showed." Pahokee's roster for the game had only 28 players, and standout Chris Dunkley, who transfered from Royal Palm Beach last semester, was among those not dressed for the game. The defending Class 2B state champion Blue Devils struck first early in the second quarter when Division-I prospect De'Joshua Johnson, who started at quarterback, scrambled out of the pocket to avoid a sack and sprinted four yards around right end for a touchdown. Miguel Rodriguez's PAT kick gave the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead. Boyd Anderson quarterback Craig Weaver tied the game with a 33-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. But Johnson, who moved to wide receiver late in the first half, gave Pahokee the lead again when he caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Eason. Rodriguez's PAT kick proved to be the winning point. Boyd Anderson answered with a 80-yard scoring drive, culminated with a 41-yard touchdown by Linworth Lennon, but the Cobras PAT kick was wide. Doral Willis, a 6'1, 300 pound defensive tackle who will be a senior this fall, sealed the win for Pahokee when he registered a sack on a Boyd Anderson fourth-down play deep in Cobras territory with 40 seconds remaining. Thompson also singled-out the overall play of rising senior tailback-cornerback Jaquay Perdue, who Thompson said had an impressive spring. Raheam Buxton also had an interception for Pahokee. "We are fighting numbers right now," Thompson said of his small roster. "We haven't had a numbers issue like this in 4 or 5 years. We are okay at the skills position, but we are missing some lineman." MIAMI CENTRAL 34,GLADES CENTRAL 12: Quarterback Leron Thomas was 12 for 18 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns for the Raiders. Travis Bell had nine tackles and Gregory Dent added five tackles and two interceptions to lead the defense. Jamorris Rowley and Robert Way had 11 tackles apiece, and Way also had a fumble recovery. Wellington 13, Boynton Beach 6: Isaiah Howard completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Edwin Thomas for the Tigers. Trevor Davis had an interception and Jonathan Harris had a fumble recovery and two pass deflections. |
