MTV show captures Cypress Bay drama By Nicole La Hoz Pembroke Pines Charter Important: This article was last updated on April 10, 2008. Please call ahead to confirm hours, prices, dates and other information.
South Florida and reality TV are in for a treat with MTV's latest series, The Paper. Featuring the largest school in the country, Cypress Bay High, and its award-winning newspaper, The Circuit, this series gives viewers a glimpse into the hectic and comedic world of journalism. But The Paper does not fall under the category of scripted "reality" television. MTV News and Docs's filming of dedicated students is just what the teenage world needs. The series begins with newspaper adviser, Rhonda Weiss, about to make a crucial decision – who will become the next editor-in-chief. Will it be business manager Adam Brock, the cheerful and sometimes dramatic student who knows how to get the job done? Or perhaps Amanda Lorber, the eccentric copy editor with the gifts of proper grammar and speaking in metaphors. Sports editor Alex Angert and clubs editor Giana Pacinelli are also in the running, two students who want to prove they're worthy of receiving the title. The competition to claim the throne as top editor, however, could leave the paper doomed. The contestants become bitter, breaking up many friendships. Viewers, though, will be pleased with seeing actual drama. Being on a newspaper staff myself, I know that competing for an editor position brings out qualities in people you'd otherwise never see. While MTV's trailer and promotional blurbs exaggerate situations, they're on the right track. An editor-in-chief position does not make or break future plans of becoming the next Barbara Walters or a writer for Sports Illustrated, even though it might feel like is sometimes. Weiss and Cypress Bay's editor-in-chief must also deal with a 60-person staff, a huge task. It's not easy keeping my school's 40-person staff in line. With deadline pressure, ambitious and energetic personalities are bound to butt heads. But despite fighting, cast members do have fun moments. The lanky Alex decides to join the football team for practice with staff writer Dan Surgan for one of their stories. Dan gets a surprise party, compete with plenty of pool action. And the friendship between Cassia Laham (entertainment editor) and Amanda seems unbreakable. MTV finally captures real teenage lives. Be sure to tune in April 14 at 10:30 p.m. to catch the jokes, the romances and the drama. And most importantly, find out who will come out on top as The Circuit's editor-in-chief. IF YOU WATCH The Paper, 10:30 p.m. Mondays on MTV |
