Love Songs for a Small Planet

Do you fancy the dance?

The Dillard Center for the Arts Dance Department will perform Love Songs for a Small Planet Friday and Saturday, April 18-19.

The performance will be at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts' Amaturo Theatre at 7:30 p.m both nights; tickets cost $7.50.

This show will feature a variety of music and dances ranging from the classical and contemporary ballet to the rousing Afro-Cuban and Aboriginal dance and music.

Two guest choreographers helped in this year's performance: Guggenheim fellow Giovanni Luquini, who taught the dancers edgy contemporary dance for certain pieces, and Irmah Del Valle, who visited Dillard representing Momentum Dance Company as part of a special Touring Grant sponsored by the Florida Cultural Affairs Department.

The Dillard Dance Department has been noted for its professionalism. Don't miss this show!

Relay for Life
Got any plans for next weekend?

Get some friends together and go to Piper High on April 25-26 to participate in the Relay for Life.

The American Cancer Society sponsors this annual overnight event, which starts at 6:30 p.m. April 25 and ends at noon the next day.

Participants walk laps with cancer survivors to raise money for cancer research. There will be a luminary ceremony with a moment of silence for those who died of cancer, then the fun begins. There will be live bands and lots of games.

Participants usually stay up the whole night with their friends, so bring plenty of support. The school will be close to the public at 11 p.m., so get there early.

For information, e-mail Samantha Thompson at relay4lifepiper@aol.com. Otherwise, go to 8000 NW 44th St. in Sunrise and have some fun.

If you are interested in becoming a team captain or participating in a Relay for Life event, go to www.cancer.org/docroot/PAR/PAR_1_1_How_to_Participate.asp.

Attention Job seekers
If you are planning to get a summer job, you better get started on your search.

According to a survey of more than 1,000 hiring managers conducted by IPSOS survey company, this summer won't be so great for consumers and job seasonal seekers.

Forty-nine percent of hiring managers said they do not intend to hire ANY seasonal employees this year. When ask why, 31 percent said they don't have the budget to hire new staff. And 18 percent of hiring managers anticipate their business levels will be down.

Of those who are hiring, managers anticipate receiving more applications than or the same amount of applications as last year.

I'm guessing this worries you, so here's what you can do:

Find a job now. Three-quarters of positions will be filled by May.

Be aggressive in your hunt. That means apply online and in person. It doesn't hurt to show you want this.

Demonstrate a positive attitude. Nearly 4 out of 10 hiring managers say a positive attitude is the most important thing a seasonal employee can bring to the job.
