Students flock to convenient, cheap eats By Pearl Leon Nova High Important: This article was last updated on December 13, 2007. Please call ahead to confirm hours, prices, dates and other information.
Aside from the daily routine of going to school, students somehow find the time to seek food in the morning or after school. There are many local restaurants high school students enjoy. South Plantation High students are known for going to Mr. D's Pizza & Subs and Applebee's, while Deerfield Beach High students head to Friday's. Everglades High students often go to Quiznos and Chick-fil-A, St. Thomas students go to the Wendy's across from the school, and J.P. Taravella goes to McDonald's. Pine Crest eats at Vito's, Stoneman Douglas prefers Moe's Southwest Grill, and Hallandale High hits Sonny's. Teens who don't have jobs or enough money to spend have a tougher time going out to eat with friends. "I love food. But I'm very cheap, so I sit in class and talk about how hungry I am and see if anyone would give me something to munch on," Nova High junior Taylor Manus said. Luckily for students, a lot of places suit a teen's price range. For instance, Deerfield Beach High students find Denny's to be a nice, inexpensive place to enjoy a variety of foods. But the school hangout isn't always a place for eating. Nova High's students consistently pack Smoothie King each morning. It's similar to being in rush hour traffic at 9 a.m., and at 9:25 a.m., it empties out as people head to school. Nova students don't look at the place only as a quick pick-me-up, but also as a place for the nutrients provided by the fruits. The smoothies might be pricey, but they are healthy and quick. "Smoothie King is worth every single penny," Nova junior Peachy Shen said. "It's tasty and healthy." You don't always have to go out to enjoy food with friends. At schools like McFatter Tech, students' food is prepared by the Culinary Arts program. The food is so good and inexpensive that students prefer to eat at school rather than go out. The school even allows visitors to come on campus to buy food. "I like eating my school food better than going out and eating somewhere else, because my school food is really homemade," McFatter Tech junior Daniel Caberes said. "Students prepare the foods from scratch; it's not frozen and pre-made. It's better quality and it tastes good." Still, restaurants are for high schoolers what playgrounds are for kindergartners: a place to hang out. Many students make spending time with friends a priority, whether in school or outside of it. So finding a close sit-down restaurant is important to them. For Pompano Beach High students, "a trendy place is Bru's Room, a nice place to play pool and hang out with friends," sophomore Freddy Masterson said. "People go there because they want to socialize. ... I guess they just want to find a close place to chill." |
