The Loud Wars is chaotic By Olivia Valdes North Broward Prep Posted October 29 2009
"Most lyrics written while pacing around railroad tracks by the side of a highway," writes So Many Dynamos in The Loud Wars' album liner. These words prepare listeners for the frenzied 40 minutes of music to come. Sonically, The Loud Wars is chaotic. Surprisingly, though, the chaos never loses its control or becomes jumbled. This is the band's ultimate goal, as evidenced by a repeated lyric amid the raucous chorus of It's Gonna Rain: "I don't wanna make amends, I just wanna make a mess." With Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla heading up The Loud Wars' production, comparisons between So Many Dynamos and Death Cab will be drawn. But the bands have few to no serious similarities. Rather than using a quiet, melancholic style to appeal to listeners, So Many Dynamos creates a discordant, somewhat jarring sound. A strong sense of irreverence and self-awareness gives The Loud Wars an intensity that meshes well with SMD's music. As long as SMD continues to keep frenetic guitar and drums from overshadowing the lyrics, its songs won't lose the snarky undertones that so articulately describe the state of our society. |
