Worst Week is the best

Murphy's Law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, in the funniest possible way.

At least, that's Worst Week's take on it.

"This madcap comedy from one of the twisted minds behind Scrubs boldly goes where no family misadventure has gone before" proudly proclaims the back of the complete series set of Worst Week, a 16-episode mini-series based on the British sitcom The Worst Week of My Life.

For once, I think the box isn't lying.

Worst Week is the story of do-gooder Sam Briggs (Kyle Bornheimer) as he temporarily moves in with the parents of his pregnant fiance, Mel Clayton (Erinn Hayes).

It's regular rom-com fodder, if it wasn't for Sam's unexplained horrid luck whenever he is near his soon-to-be in-laws. Maybe it's bad karma for knocking up their daughter before marriage?

Not wanting to ruin any of the laughs, I'll simply tell you that Worst Week feels very much like Scrubs (the final episode prominently features the unmistakable Sacred Heart Hospital), yet still thrives off its own chaotic energy.

Then again, how could it not, since it co-stars Kurtwood Smith (Red Forman on That 70's Show).

Little things build on each other until everything erupts in a perfect storm of comedy and cringing.

The DVD set lacks the bonuses of some bigger series. The special features only consist of commentary over the pilot, which is never that great.

Still, Worst Week is comedy gold that will have you laughing even on your 20th viewing.
