Spanish River wins district title By Steve Dorsey Special Correspondent Posted October 30 2009
Boca Raton --
Spanish River, one the most successful girls' volleyball programs in the state, claimed its 20th district title Thursday night in convincing fashion. The Sharks notched their 19th win of the season by defeating a young but pesky Wellington team 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 in the championship match of the District 15-5A tournament. Spanish River will now host a regional quarterfinals match Tuesday against Nova (17-5). Wellington (20-5) will travel to Broward County to face St. Thomas Aquinas (20-3), the District 16-5A champion, on Tuesday. "Our defense was solid, our serving was solid, but I still think we can take it one more step," Spanish River coach Roxi Bradway said. "There were a lot of positives." One of which was the play of junior Olivia Mesner, who had 16 kills and eight blocks for the Sharks (19-7). Senior Kristina Wilson also had an outstanding match for Spanish River with 35 assists, 11 digs, 10 service points and six kills. Wellington, which was the No. 3 seed, could not quite match the overall play of the more experienced Sharks. "Spanish River's got a heck of a program. They have for years," said Wellington coach Steve Swan, whose roster includes only two seniors. The district runner-up Wolverines were led by junior Nikki Naccarato, who had 48 assists. Katelyn Rawls and Kelly Sullivan, both sophomores, had nine and eight kills, respectively, for Wellington. Boca rallies to win 9-6A Lindsey Knapp had 19 kills, Melissa Green added 28 digs and Julia Schade had 40 assists as Boca Raton shook off a first set loss to defeat host Jupiter 17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 to capture the District 9-6A championship.
