Once students are familiar with the basic structure of Teenlink, they can begin to analyze its contents.

Week 6: Make An Outline

Have students outline an article they like from Teenlink, including the main ideas and the important details that support the main idea.

Week 7: What's On the Cover?

Ask students to check out the front cover of Teenlink. Start a discussion about the "look" of the cover, such as elements they like or don't like, explaining why. Ask them to think about what they would do differently. As an extension, have them design their own cover format for a teen newspaper or magazine, based on the content they would like to see inside.

LA.C.3.4 – The student uses speaking strategies effectively.
VA.E.1.4 – The student makes connections between the visual arts, other disciplines, and the real world.

Week 8: Photo Clues

For a few weeks in a row, cut out photos from Teenlink. Hand them out to your students, and ask them to formulate predictions about the subject of the photo based only on visual clues such as the setting of the photo; the time of day and year; clothing and belongings of the people; facial expressions; types of objects in the photos; background objects or location; interaction of characters and objects. As an extension, ask them to write a short feature story about the subject of the photo, based on what they have observed.

LA.C.2.4 – The student uses viewing strategies effectively.
LA.B.1.4 – The student uses writing processes effectively.
LA.B.2.4 – The student writes to communicate ideas and information effectively.

Week 9: Putting Things in Order

Choose several Teenlink articles. Cut them apart, including the headline, and place the pieces in an envelope. Hand them out and ask the students to put their article into the correct order. To make the activity more challenging, put more than one article and set of headlines into the envelope and have them put the pieces of each together correctly.

LA.A.1.4 – The student uses the reading process effectively.
LA.A.2.4 – The student constructs meaning from a wide range of texts.

Week 10: Martians Have Landed!

Tell students that aliens have arrived from another planet and the first thing they saw was an issue of Teenlink. Have them write an essay to predict what an alien reading Teenlink might think about our culture. What impressions would they get? What would they think is important to us?

LA.B.2.4 – The student writes to communicate ideas and information effectively.

Week 11: Movie Time

For several weeks in a row, ask students to keep a list of the movies that are reviewed in Teenlink until they have a list of at least 10. Then have them research how many of the movies on the list were based on other sources for their ideas, such as books, essays, comic books, plays, or even a previous movie.

LA.A.1.4 – The student uses the reading process effectively.
LA.A.2.4 – The student constructs meaning from a wide range of texts.

Week 12: Plan to Have Fun

Have students read the "Weekend Planner" pages in Teenlink. Divide the class into groups, with each group voting on an activity in which they all would like to participate. Have them calculate the total cost to attend and the distance they will have to travel, estimating the cost for gas. Ask each group to explain why they chose the activity.
