GAINESVILLE — Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp says Jeff Driskel is out for the season due to a lower right leg injury he suffered against Tennessee, and Tyler Murphy is the Gators' new starting quarterback.
Driskel was expected to help jumpstart the Gators' offense this season. However, the Oviedo Hagerty High graduate has been hampered by a series of injuries. He had to have his appendix removed before preseason camp began and suffered a minor knee injury at Miami two weeks ago. However, he suffered the worst injury under pressure from Tennessee. He appeared to hurt his right ankle as he tossed a pass that was intercepted by the Vols.
"When he looked at the sideline and waved, I knew it was not good," Muschamp said when asked for his thoughts at the time Driskel's injury.
UF later learned Driskel needed surgery.
Murphy stepped in when Driskel was hurt early in the Tennessee game and helped lead UF to a 31-17 win. Before facing off with the Vols, Murphy had not thrown a pass at the college level.
