The same day Jeff Ireland was removed this week Tom Gambles name surfaced as the front runner to replace him as the Miami Dolphins General Manager.

The Dolphins have finally sought permission to interview Gamble, who just finished up his first season as vice president of player personnel for the playoff bound Philadelphia Eagles.

Gamble spent his previous eight seasons with the 49ers in the same role. He began his career as a scout for Bill Polian in Indianapolis. He's helped produce 11 playoff teams (five with the Colts, four with the Eagles and two with the 49ers).

The Dolphins presently have seven candidates for the position as the team's top personnel executive, who will control the team's roster, draft, and report directly to owner Steve Ross.

During his tenure with the 49ers Gamble was part of a scouting department that drafted extremely well, selecting talents like Aldon Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Michael Crabtree, Navorro Bowman, Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, Dashon Goldson, Vernon Davis and numerous others.

However, Gamble's final draft class with the 49ers featured a couple of busts like receiver A.J. Jenkins, the team's first-round pick in 2012, and tailback LaMichael James, its second rounder.

Last year the Eagles selected offensive lineman Lane Johnson in the first round, tight end Zach Ertz in the second, defensive tackle Benny Logan in the third, and safety Earl Wolff in the fifth round. All four were significant contributors to Chip Kelly's playoff team.

The interview process began on Friday with Jason Licht, the Cardinals' vice president of player personnel.

Licht is a former Dolphins scouting assistant (1995) and offensive quality control coach (1996). He's also served as the Patriots' director of pro personnel from 2009-11.

Tennessee's Lake Dawson, Pittsburgh's Omar Khan, Cleveland's Ray Farmer, Arizona's Jason Licht, the New York Giants' Marc Ross, and Dolphins' assistant GM Brian Gaine are the other contenders for the General Manager position.
