Dolphins rookie defensive end Olivier Vernon left with a left ankle injury late in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams.
Vernon, the third-round pick out of the University of Miami, was injured while covering a kickoff that Rams upback Brit Miller fumbled and Marcus Thigpen recovered at the Rams’ 25 yard line.
On the previous defensive series, Vernon registered his first full sack of the year, dropping Sam Bradford for an 8-yard loss on third and 6 from the Dolphins 26. That gave Vernon 1.5 sacks on the year.
Rookie kicker Greg Zuerlein followed with his first career miss on a 52-yard field goal attempt.
Vernon tried to work out the problem on the sideline but returned to the Dolphins locker room at the two-minute warning.
Vernon re-entered the game as a third-down pass rusher on the Rams' first series of the second half. He made a key sack against Sam Bradford in the closing minute to extend the Rams' field goal attempt to 66 yards.
