DAVIE – Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey missed Wednesday’s practice because he’s in Massachusetts to address questions from a grand jury.

Pouncey was subpoenaed by Massachusetts law enforcement authorities on Oct. 27 after Miami’s 27-17 loss to the Patriots, and he’s committed to answering questions related to his former college teammate Aaron Hernandez this week.

A team source told the Sun-Sentinel that Pouncey, who has started all but two games since 2011, would return to the team in time for Sunday’s home game against the Patriots. The Dolphins don't practice on Thursday, and conclude their week of preparation for the Patriots on Friday.

Hernandez, the former Patriots tight end and Gators standout, has been charged with the murder of associate Odin Lloyd, an acquaintance whose body was found a mile from Hernandez’s home in June. He is also being investigated for intrastate gun trafficking.

It is unclear if authorities view Pouncey, who shared an apartment with Hernandez for two seasons, as a possible witness or a suspect in the gun trafficking investigation.

Hernandez, 24, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and five-related weapons charges in September. He is being held without bail.

The Dolphins had center Nate Garner man the center spot while Sam Brenner played left guard. Garner filled in for Pouncey two games this season when Pouncey was sidelined by a stomach illness. Brenner has been pushing Garner for the starting left guard spot vacated by Richie Incognito's suspension.
