The Frost Art Museum’s new “Aesthetics and Values” exhibit came together in the classroom of artist John William Bailly, who tapped 40 Florida International University Honors College students to build an art show from scratch.
Here’s the wrinkle: The majority of Bailly’s students aren’t art majors. After finishing a two-semester course taught by Bailly, also a painter-in-residence at Miami’s Deering Estate, students found sponsors, organized studio field trips and fundraising bake sales, created a catalog and spotlighted new works by nine acclaimed local artists.
Included in the show are South Florida concert photos by photographer Monica McGivern (also a guitarist in Miami surf-rock band Mo’Booty, performing during the show’s opening reception); the Hollywood Golden Age-style paintings of Kristin Thiele; and the geometric sculptures of Carolina Sardi. Also on display are works by painters Brandon Opalka, Elizabeth Condon, Peter Hosfeld and Christina Pettersson, collage artist Moira Holohan and digital artist Felecia Chizuko Carlisle.
When: April 22-June 24 (opening reception 4-7 p.m. April 22)
