Here’s what is happening on South Florida stages this week.
This play being staged by Fort Lauderdale’s New City Players won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 2001. The title “Proof” refers to a mathematical proof that a recently deceased genius may have written, if only his daughter Catherine can prove it. Complicating matters is that her father struggled with mental illness, a condition Catherine worries may have been passed on to her. “ ‘Proof’ is a play about legacy, inheritance and trust,” director Timothy Mark Davis says in a press release. “It’s also a play about the struggles between parents and children, particularly when mental illness is involved. I hope it reminds us that our longing for proof, in any given area of life, can sometimes only come in the form of trust.”
