Best Bets: Film Events

“Broke”:  A story of bankruptcy among retired professional athletes, will air Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. on ESPN, for the network’s second round of its “30 for 30” series. Billy Corben’s next documentary, “Dawg Fight”, explores the culture of underground bare-knuckle fighting in Miami’s West Perrine neighborhood. The film is expected to be released in the spring of 2013.

“Gayby”: A comedy about a woman who decides to have a child with her gay male friend, will screen Oct. 5 at 10 p.m., during the Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The next day at 7 p.m., the love of two women and their struggle to legitimize it is played out in “A Perfect Ending.”

“How I Became an Elephant”: Timothy Gorski’s documentary on Juliette West, a 14-year-old on a journey to save the Southeast Asian elephant from extinction, goes on 6 p.m. Oct. 22 during the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival at Cinema Paradiso. Gorski, a graduate of the Fort Lauderdale Art Institute, directed the film for his production company, Rattle the Cage.
