The Coral Springs Museum has much to celebrate for its 16th birthday this year: a growing partnership with the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale; a new director in Bryan Knicely; and one other benefit.
"We're officially old enough to own a driver's license," Knicely says with a laugh.
To mark the occasion, the museum is having a Sweet Sixteen Party on Sept. 26, which also serves as a reception for its fall exhibitions, "Americana Collection" by Sandee Berman and "Glackens as Illustrator."
A showcase of 40 illustrations by Impressionist painter William Glackens, the display, on loan from MOAFL's private collection, is a portal to early-1900s fashion and blue-collar milieu. For example, his crayon-and-watercolor work, "Far From the Fresh Air Farm: the Crowded City Street, with Its Dangers and Temptations, is a Pitiful Makeshift Playground for Children," focuses on a bustling New York neighborhood of fruit vendors, horse-drawn carriages, 5-cent beer taverns and stickball-swinging kids.
"He captured the Industrial Revolution and the age of innocence," Knicely says. "He wanted to show an understanding of what the common people felt, how men's and women's fashions were changing. You didn't have social realism and trends in art like this unless you picked up a newspaper for its illustrations."
Paired with Glackens is a 12-artwork series of drawings from Berman, a Coral Springs resident whose color pencil drawings of still lifes and depictions of Americana — including one of Las Olas — pair well with the Glackens' offerings, Knicely says.
The party, a fundraiser for the museum, will also include a library dedication to O'Keefe and a book signing for "A Sow's Ear," a self-published autobiography by museum board member A. Ian Fraser. Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available, as will a raffle for items such as Romero Britto's "Dancing Boy" sculpture and tickets to ride aboard the Goodyear blimp.
