Ten theater summer camps in South Florida

Summer camp can be more than toasting marshmallows. There are also performing-arts summer camps for up-and-coming talents. Here are 10 in South Florida.

CAMP BROADWAY MIAMI

What: For children ages 10-17, the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts’ week-long program culminates with a performance of “Shrek the Musical, Jr.”

When: Aug. 7-11; 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Where: Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami

Cost: $750 (includes lunches, snacks and water)

BROWARD CENTER THEATER SUMMER CAMPS

What: Offerings from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts include Acting Up Camp (for children ages 7-9), Broadway Bound Camp (10-13), Company Group Camp (13-18). Sessions will be located Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines and Aventura.

When: There are various four-week sessions for different ages June 12-Aug. 18. Camp hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Where: Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale; Pembroke Pines City Center, 601 City Center Way; Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St.

Cost: $890 per session (sibling and multisession discounts as well as a limited number of scholarships are available). Lunches are available for $120 for each four-week session. Early camp from 8 to 9 a.m. costs $50 per session or $5 per day. Late camp from 4 to 6 p.m. costs $100 per session or $10 per day. Early and late camp combined costs $150 per session.

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE GOLDNER CONSERVATORY OF PERFORMING ARTS VACATION CAMP

What: Twelve sessions of varying lengths and for different age groups at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

When: Various sessions stretching from June 5 through Aug. 4. Most camps are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays (dance camps are 3:30-8:30 p.m.)

JCAT SUMMER STOCK

What: The Jewish Cultural Arts Theatre’s weekly sessions mix improvisation, pantomime and street-performing classes with swimming and field trips for students entering grades 2-6.

When: June 12-Aug. 4; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays

Where: 18900 NE 25th Ave, Miami

Cost: $425 per week for two-, three- and four-week sessions. Beyond five weeks, cost is $351 per week. JCC membership is required.

SUMMER 2017 ARTSCAMP

What: Kravis Center for the Performing Arts’ intensive performing-arts program (acting, dance, musical theater, technical theater and vocal music) is for students ages 9-11. There are also programs for young performing artists during the summer, such as the Broadway Artists Intensive (June 26-30 for ages 9-13 with a cost of $450 and July 10-29 for ages 12-20 with a cost of $1,650; TheBroadwayArtistsIntensive.com) and the Paris Ballet Conservatory Intensive (July 3-8 for students entering 4-12 grades with a cost of $600; ParisBalletDance.com).

When: June 5-23; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays

Where: Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach.

Cost: $650 (scholarships are available)

LAKE WORTH PLAYHOUSE SUMMER CAMP

What: Two sessions for ages 8-14, with session one culminating in a performance of “Hairspray, Jr.” and session two with “Legally Blonde, The Musical Jr” at Lake Worth Playhouse.

When: Session one is June 5-24. Session two is July 10-29. Both sessions are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aftercare 3-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday costs $100 per week, per camper.

Cost: $600 a session ($540 for siblings)

SOL CHILDREN THEATRE’S PERFORMING ARTS SUMMER CAMP

What: Two sessions for children ages 8 and older with session one performing “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.” and session two performing “The Addams Family” through programs at the Sol Children Theatre in Boca Raton.

When: Session one is June 5-30 and session two is July 10-Aug. 4. Both sessions are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Where: Olympic Heights Community High School, 20101 Lyons Road, Boca Raton

Cost: $1,290. Attending both sessions costs $2,325. A 10 percent discount is offered for each sibling registered. Campers can opt out of the lunches and deduct $90 per session. Before-care 7:30-8:45 a.m. costs $25 a week and aftercare 3:15-5:30 p.m. costs $45 a week.

STA SUMMER THEATER ACADEMY

What: Two sessions for students in grades 6, 7 and 8 interested in musical theater at the St. Thomas Aquinas Bienes Center for the Arts. A monologue and improvisation intensive-study session is available. Daily activities are based on the Florida State Thespian Competition standards and practices.

When: Session one is June 12-16 and session two is June 19-23.

Where: Both sessions are 8-30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays. The intensive study sessions are 1:45-3:30 p.m. weekdays.

Cost: $325 per student if registered by May 25; $350 afterward. The intensive study session costs $125 per student, per week.

FLORIDA GRAND OPERA’S YOUTH ARTIST LEARNING ACADEMY (YALA)

What: The Florida Grand Opera designed its YALA Summer Vocal Institute for kids in grades 7-12 who are aspiring opera singers, interested in backstage craft or are fans of the art form. There is also an advanced-techniques career-track session (4-5 p.m. for an additional $300).

When: June 12-30; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (application deadline is May 31)

ART AND CULTURE CENTER’S SUMMER ARTS CAMP

What: There are three camps for several interests and skill levels with various sessions throughout the summer at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. Littlest Actors/Littlest Artists is for children ages 4-6. Young Actors/Young Artists is for children ages 6-12. Broadway Actors is an intensive program for young people ages 8-18.

When: Various sessions June 12-Aug. 18

Where: Arts and Culture Center Arts School, 1626 Harrison St., Hollywood; ArtsPark at Young Circle, 1 Young Circle, Hollywood; Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, 1770 Monroe St.

Cost: Half-day sessions cost $325 for members and $350 for nonmembers. Full-day sessions cost $425 for members and $450 for nonmembers. The Broadway Actors program costs $800 for members and $850 for nonmembers.
