See that billboard up there, just south of the I-595 interchange along I-95? That's Georgia O'Keeffe's "Sky Above Clouds IV." The bus shelter near the corner of Oakland Park Boulevard and State Road 7? It's the stern, pitchfork-wielding farmers of Grant Wood's "American Gothic."
Classic masterpieces of American art have invaded nearly 150 roadside billboards, bus wraps and bus shelters across South Florida, reproduced as prints on areas normally occupied by street ads. The campaign, dubbed Art Everywhere, is about acquainting locals with the strongest examples of American art, says Max Anderson, director of the Dallas Museum of Art.
"I wanted these works to explore the whole breadth of American art. No problem, right?" says Anderson, whose museum is one of five that participated in Art Everywhere. "We want the public to be conscious to the best art of the United States. It isn't taught nearly enough in public schools, anymore."
Fifty-eight works were also handpicked by the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. About 170,000 voters cast ballots for their favorite works on ArtEverywhereUs.org. Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," the public favorite, can be found on an I-95 billboard at Northwest 79th Street in Miami.
