At the South Florida Fair, dazed but not confused

When she hypnotizes her subjects onstage, Catherine Hickland is always amazed at what happens.

"You just don't know what people are going to do," the actress, author and comedian says during a phone interview. "I've seen a man do a perfect Riverdance, like he had done it all his life, and a heavyset person whip off his shirt and pretend he was a supermodel."

Hickland, a Broadway and television actress best known for her roles on "One Life To Live" and "Knight Rider," will perform two shows daily through Jan. 26 at the South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach.

Not a big fan of the standup world, Hickland, a Fort Lauderdale native, has recently dedicated her career to combining comedy with hypnotism. For the first 45 minutes of her hour-long show, she hypnotizes audience members, prompting them to goof around and dance onstage. She dedicates the final 15 minutes to delivering what she says is an inspirational message.

"Let's just say I want to ease their doubt and empower their dream for their life," Hickland says, "and help them to find a map to get there and to make them understand that they are very much loved."

While in town, Hickland says she plans on visiting her alma mater, Fort Lauderdale High School, and catching up with some of her school buddies. "Oh, and I really want to eat at Egg N' You," she says. "When I was a little girl, I used to go in there and entertain the waitresses."

Catherine Hickland will perform through Jan. 26 at the South Florida Fair, 9067 Southern Blvd., in West Palm Beach. Admission to her show is free with fair admission. Go to
