A movement started by Seattle author Sherman Alexie has made its way to South Florida: Big-name authors will work in bookstores in support of Small Business Saturday.
Dave Barry and nine others will be at the Coral Gables Books and Books (265 Aragon Ave.), waiting on customers and recommending things to read, and not necessarily their own work. Books and Books will also have authors stationed at its stores in Bal Harbour and Miami Beach.
Cristina Nosti, director of events and marketing for Books and Books says Sherman suggested the idea that "book nerds" become booksellers, make recommendations and urge readers to buy multiple copies of friends' books.
"The idea has really caught on," Nosti says. "Authors are volunteering everywhere. And it's not like he's there to promote Dave Barry. He's there to promote Books and Books."
Former pinup photographer Bunny Yeager will sell items from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Books and Books gift shop inside the Coral Gables Museum next door.
In addition to Barry, who'll work from 4 to 6 p.m., authors set to appear at the Coral Gables store include Debra Dean, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Anjanette Delgado, Steve Raichlen and Raquel Roque, 1-3 p.m.; Norman Van Aken and Dav Pilkey, 2-4 p.m.; Lynne Barrett, 3-5 p.m.; Les Standiford, 4-6 p.m.; and Patricia Engel, 7-9 p.m. The store will be open from 9 a.m. to midnight.
Brian Antoni and Carolina Garcia-Aguilera will work from 4 to 6 p.m. at 927 Lincoln Road, which will be open from 10 a.m. to midnight.
Sharon Socol will work 2 to 4 p.m. at Bal Harbor Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., which will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
