Miami Book Fair: Books and books and books

The Miami Book Fair International is almost too much of a good thing.

Now in its 30th year, the weeklong celebration of reading, writing, literature and publishing draws thousands of people to meet hundreds of authors. That adds up to an impressive, even overwhelming, amount of books to be signed and, for the people who leave the event resembling pack mules, their limbs quivering under the weight of tote bags stuffed with hardcovers, a staggering number of books to be read.

With so many authors attending, the fair can offer the best kind of dilemma, with more than a dozen readings often taking place concurrently across the campus. Do you see your favorite mystery writer discuss her new book at 11 a.m. in Building 1, or do you check out that young literary novelist everyone's been raving about, who'll be reading at the same time over in Building 8?

Short of cloning yourself, you're just going to have to make a choice. And because we all know that one of you is enough, we've attempted to guide your decisionmaking with the following by-no-means-complete list of authors worth checking out: Pat Conroy, 6 p.m. Tuesday; Carl Hiaasen, 8 p.m. Wednesday; Lawrence Wright, 11 a.m. Saturday; Doris Kearns Goodwin, 1:30 p.m. Saturday; Sheri Fink, 3 p.m. Saturday; Junot Diaz, 10 a.m. Nov. 24; Karen Russell, 11 a.m. Nov. 24; Jeremy Scahill, 11:30 a.m. Nov. 24; Richard Russo, 2:30 p.m. Nov. 24; and Patricia Engel, 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24.

Click here to read an interview with Dan Brown, who'll open the fair on Nov. 17, and here to read an interview with Sherman Alexie, who'll appear on Nov. 19.
