Nicki Minaj kimono designer stages Miami Beach fashion show

Nicki Minaj kimono designer puts on fashion show in Miami Beach

You know what Japanese Spring Festival means: kimono fashion show!

The Consulate General of Japan in Miami is teaming up with the Miami Beach Botanical Garden for a free admission event Sunday, March 22 in the Garden.

The Festival is from 11 a.m. until around 4 p.m.. The fashion show will be at 1 p.m. and will feature 14 ensembles designed by Hiromi Asai, whose kimonos have been worn by Nicki Minaj and have appeared in Vogue magazine.

"This show is not what you think it is," says Miwako Patton, a spokeswoman for the Consulate. "When you think of kimonos you might picture something like a geisha, but these designs have a modern influence. They are a fusion of eastern and western cultures."

The 4th annual Japanese Spring Festival will also include:

Taiko drumming performances (11:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.).

Sushi and bento boxes from SooWoo restaurant.

Sake tasting by Hiro sake.

Art activities for children (Zen gardens, origami, paper lanterns).

Giant koi fish release by Dan Barrett of Pond Alchemy (3 p.m.).

Bamboo and Florida native plant sale.

Name writing in Japanese kanji.

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is located at 2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach 33139. For more information, call 305-673-7256 or go to MBgarden.org.
