Like any theatrical experience, Blue Man Group’s show starts with an appeal to the audience to silence their cell phones.
That’s always a good idea, but it hardly matters, since you couldn’t hear your phone ring if it were right next to your ear.
The performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami is powerfully loud, with a rocking band (can we go ahead and call them a blues band?) elevated upstage and three blue-hued actors/musicians (aliens? Mutants? Really cold people?) banging away on PVC pipes and walloping the daylights out of drums. It’s earsplitting, yet the indigo guys never utter a peep.
The show is an eye-popping mix of mime, magic and music layered over sight gags, soundscapes and silliness. Comedic bits range from a neon disco party to a Twinkie “feast,” paintball spitting and a preoccupation with Jell-O.
The best skit - and by that I mean the one that felt freshest - involved towering, iPad-looking tablets called GiPads. “We want to do for Gipad what texting has done for driving,” a narrator intones. For about 10 minutes, the troupe plays with images. It’s fast-moving and funny, with video puns and quick changes (Carmen Miranda pops out of nowhere). It is inspired, and more than makes up for the slightly gross-out sight later on of marshmallow cream being regurgitated into sculptures and digested Twinkies oozing from chest holes. Ewwww.
You’ll be wowed by the inventiveness of it all, while grateful the whole thing lasts about 90 minutes with no intermission. But your kids will jump out of their seats with joy, especially when enormous beach balls are bounced out into the audience for the finale.
