The Art of Video Games, Oct. 24-Jan. 13, 2013: Can the virtual worlds summoned by video game designers be considered art? Unless you’re Roger Ebert, the answer’s yes, as the new show, “The Art of Video Games,” will argue when it heads to The Boca Raton Museum of Art. The touring Smithsonian exhibit traces the 40-year history of pixelated graphics, from Pong to Call of Duty, and offers five playable video games.
Art Live Fair, Oct. 26-Oct. 28 ArtLiveFair.org, 786-300-9840: In April, Antonia Wright asked the residents of Overtown’s Lotus House women’s shelter to lay supine on the grass and point their toes toward the sun, part of an empowering 16-video project debuting during the Art Live Fair. The Miami show, benefiting Lotus House, also has installations from local art shamans TM Sisters, Catalina Jaramillo and Christina Pettersson.
Art Basel Miami Beach, Dec. 6-9: Sure, you could pop into the Miami Beach Convention Center, epicenter of the international art world, and make that your highbrow Basel experience. Lowbrow-loving Baselites, including me, however, will be scorning sleep for four consecutive nights, shuttling to Miami’s dozen-plus indie satellite fairs (e.g. Red Dot), each home to secret Midtown bashes and South Beach rooftop DJ sets.
Annie Leibovitz, Jan. 17, 2013-June 9, 2013: The silver-haired photog responsible for the last half-century’s most-iconic magazine covers – Lennon and Yoko in Rolling Stone, Demi Moore pregnant in Vanity Fair – will have 39 of her most-iconic celeb snapshots highlighted at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. The Norton recently bought the images after 10 months of negotiations with Leibovitz.
David Leroi: Amusez Le Galerie, Jan. 26, 2013-Feb. 22, 2013: David Leroi’s comic-book-inspired panels all have the smack of Lichtenstein, until, of course, you notice that his characters’ speech bubbles take a turn toward agitprop. X-Men’s The Beast talks of a jobless America while Iron Man complains that his rocket shoes have been outsourced to China. Opens at Art and Culture Center of Hollywood.
