Model from Boca Raton picked for Tyra Banks' "Top Model

Staff Writer

Palm City just wasn't big enough for Alex Agro.

So when the family moved to Boca Raton two years ago, she took full advantage of her expanded opportunities.

"From when I was a very little girl my entire dream was to live in New York City," Agro says in a telephone interview from her New York apartment. "I knew I was not made for these small towns. I was taking college classes while in high school. I love where I grew up, but I knew that I was ready for more than a small city could give me."

Now the model is a contestant on Tyra Banks' "America's Next Top Model" when cycle 20 - the first to add male models to the mix - premieres Friday, August 2 at 8 p.m. on SFL-TV, The CW.

"I was born in Fort Lauderdale, but grew up in Palm City," she explains. "Now my family lives in Boca. And I'm going to Florida Atlantic University. I go to the school of business, majoring in marketing. I'm almost done actually. I'm back and forth from New York to Miami to Boca. My boyfriend lives in New York so it's a very complicated situation. I'm everywhere. I'm all over the map."

Here's a little more about the Martin County High School graduate.

Her audition: "I came up here [Manhattan] for the audition...and the day before I got in a huge car accident. I landed at the airport, get a cab and the cab is rear-ended. The cab got into an accident. So I was in the hospital the entire night before the audition. I got home at four in the morning and the audition was at six and I could hardly walk. I didn't care. I was going."

Working and living with male models: "This is crazy, but I have a boyfriend. I have this incredible relationship. I am very happy. I was very conflicted about leaving and going to live with these groups of guys. It was a very interesting situation but at the same time I was so lucky because he trusts me. It was crazy. It was insane. But I like guys more than girls. There's less drama with guys and guys are more fun to hang out with. I mean I'd go mudding and things like that. Girls are a little prissy and a lot more catty. The guys are more chill and just hang out and there's not a lot of drama."

Shopping in South Florida: "I love Town Center Mall, but personally I don't like spending a lot of money. I like Forever 21 or small places in Town Center Mall. I love fashion but I can make such cute outfits on a budget."

What she does to relax: "My down time is just hanging out with my mom [Carol]. She is the most incredible person ever. She keeps me sane. Or I'm just talking with friends, watching TV and laying in bed because I never get a moment to myself. Ever. I'm usually walking on the beach with my mom or taking walks with my mom. She's my world. She's my best friend."

Favorite "Top Model" judge: "Why Tyra Banks of course. I've watched 'Top Model' since I was very young. Meeting Tyra was....well, I'm not starstruck usually - living back and forth in New York City you always see famous people - but I swear to you when I saw Tyra Banks I almost had a heart attack. She built this empire. You're not a model forever. You're a model for a very short time. Who wouldn't want to take advice from her? She's incredible."

Advice for model wannabees: "I'd say, 'go for it.' It's the most incredible experience ever and you'll have the time of your life. Don't be nervous. I didn't know what to expect so I was a little nervous. Beware of the drama and the people you meet along the way. Some of these girls are insane."
