There will be 150 performers onstage but all the costumes combined would barely make one load of laundry.
That’s the way it goes when the boy-bacchanal-meets-burlesque fundraiser “Broward Bares It” returns for the fourth time Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in Hollywood’s Paradise Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The 90-minute variety show benefits Broward House, the county’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization.
“Almost 99 percent of the cast is new this year,” says Terry DeCarlo, director of marketing for Broward House. “What I did this year that was a little different from years past is that I hired a choreographer/producer who put out a casting call. And they came in droves. We had to turn some people away. It’s people taking their clothes off. Who knew it could be so popular?”
This year’s theme - “I Do, Do You” – riffs off of marriage equality, says DeCarlo. “There’s a lot of marriage stuff going on around the country. We thought it sort of linked everything together for the singers, dancers and comedians.”
Some of the 20-plus acts include: Rainbow Cirque circus performers; Maxim covergirl Andrea Garcia; competitive pole dancer Derick Pierson; Benny’s Burlesque; Bazaii Ladyboys Cabaret and erotic dancers from both Boardwalk Bar and Johnny’s Fort Lauderdale. Florida’s Own Dame Edna returns as the host.
“It’s a night of comedy, burlesque and old vaudeville,” explains DeCarlo. “It’s all the stuff you would see in a comedy show with an air of sex about it – all the stuff they can’t show you on TV. We take the burlesque and stripping only up to a point. It’s all very choreographed. As a matter of fact, we’re practicing right now to make sure you leave with a happy ending.”
Broward House has 15 locations throughout South Florida that take care of 6,000 women, men and families by providing housing, food, medication and emotional support. The first year the event raised $30,000; the second $50,000 and last year $60,000. The goal this year is $75,000.
“Broward Bares It” starts at 7 p.m. at Paradise Live, 1 Seminole Way in Hollywood. Tickets are $45 for general admission and $65 for V.I.P. front row. To order, go to BrowardBaresIt.com.
