Summertime in South Florida usually means that the performing-arts community has shifted into standby mode. But for kids, there are a number of opportunities to learn and/or be entertained.
Summer Rocks 2014
The Palm Beach Pops has a music education series for children up to age 12 in Boca Raton in four 45-minute sessions with the four sections of the orchestra (brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion).

Colony Theatre Performance Camp, Where Stars Begin
Geared to children ages 6 through 16, the program will teach costuming, scenic design and performance while spotlighting theater and dance from around the world.

Cirque Dreams KidsTime
The two-day intensive instructional summer camp pairs children ages 10 to 18 with Cirque Dreams performers, teachers and circus-act experts.

Shrek the Musical
The 1990 bestseller begat the 2001 blockbuster movie, which became the 2008 hit Broadway musical that is now being produced by the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre with a cast of all ages.

The Commedia Pinocchio
The classic story of the little puppet who wishes he could be a real boy will here be told in the Italian Commedia dell’arte style, which means characterizations done with masks, music, dance, physical comedy and humorous dialogue.

Opera in Concert for Kids
Palm Beach Opera is staging arias and ensembles from the likes of Mozart, Rossini and Puccini in a family-friendly, one-hour format geared to children ages 3 to 11.

Comedy legend Mell Brooks added music and lyrics to the 1974 movie version of "Young Frankenstein" and got a Broadway hit in 2007. Now the Pre-Professional Actors of the Next Stop Broadway Teen Theatre Project are putting their twist on the twisted musical-comedy.
