Well, at least for the first 100 people who RSVP online for Funkshion: Fashion Week Miami Beach from Wednesday through Saturday, March 26-29. That has been the deal from the very beginning of the biennial staging of runway events back in 2003.
Funkshion is a four-day spate of evening catwalk capers mounted in a mammoth tent set up on the sands of Collins Park in Miami Beach, between W South Beach and the Setai Miami Beach hotels.
For this, the event’s 26th season, organizers say things will get off to a potential-celeb-spotting start Wednesday with a show for the Holt label featuring Joanna Krupa, “The Real Housewives of Miami” star and a Maxim magazine cover girl.
Model Liliana Montoya’s swimwear label show will open Thursday night’s schedule of shows, which spotlight Miami designers such as Indie True by Cassondra Youngs and her flirty dress looks.
“That night, there’s also Krelwear’s show,” Funkshion co-founder Matt Heien says. “Karelle [Levy] is just an incredibly unique designer. She’s just over-the-top — I mean her knitwear designs are — and amazing, one of the greatest designers in Miami.”
Friday night’s event will start with the Prime magazine launch party and fashion show hosted by Stephan Morris and Carpe Music Group.
“They’ll have a band made up of military veterans,” Heien says. “They’re from every branch of the military.”
Later Friday night, a show will feature high-end eveningwear label Sotto and up-and-comer Juan Carlos.
The fashion week will close Saturday with a screening of the 1966 surfing documentary “Endless Summer” followed by what Heien describes as “a mixed show of different surfwear brands.” The night will be hosted by Mike Hynson, one of the stars of the film.
“I’ll be in flip-flops that night for sure,” Heien says.
Unlike other fashion weeks in Miami that focus on designer resortwear collections (Miami Fashion Week in May) or swimwear (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in July), Funkshion focuses on lifestyle brands and designer diffusion lines. A diffusion line (sometimes called a bridge collection) is a secondary collection from a designer or label that has much lower prices.
Funkshion: Fashion Week Miami Beach will take place March 26-29 at Collins Park at 21st Street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. To see the schedule or to reserve a seat, go to Funkshion.com.
