It is jewelry and it is art.
That's why for the third year BIJOUX! takes place in an art museum, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach to be specific. The contemporary art sale and fundraiser runs from Thursday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 2. For museum hours go to Norton.org.
"You know any women who don't like jewelry," asks the event's chair Donna Schneier from her home in Manalapan. "People come [to the event] and it's like they never saw jewelry before."
Schneier, a trained art historian, travels extensively attending jewelry trade fairs reviewing the leading art jewelers for the sale that benefits the Norton's exhibition and education programs.
Recently she donated 200 pieces from her own collection to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Met is opening an exhibit of the pieces on May 12.
"I can hardly believe that a girl from Miami Beach has a collection at the Met," Schneier says. "How is that possible?
She continues: "If you have an exhibition and you don't have a book it's like Kleenex, they use it once and they throw it away. So we'll have a book. We're still playing around with the title, but I think it will be 'Unique By Design: Contemporary Jewelry from the Donna Schneier Collection.' And that has always been my goal for this field, to share the artists' vision with the world, with the public. An artist doesn't just create for you or for me. They create for posterity."
